Arras Christmas market in the rain: what to do on a wet or cold day

Rain does not have to turn a market afternoon in Arras into a rush between doorways. Shorten the outdoor circuit, make a warm meal the centre of the day and choose any indoor visit for its own sake. Here is how the guide suggests handling bad weather.

Short answer

What can you do in Arras when it rains at the Christmas market?

Keep the market visit short and focused on one part of Grand Place, then plan a proper sit-down meal. If an underground visit interests you, book a departure for the Boves under the town hall or the Wellington Tunnels, but neither is a drop-in shelter. The Boves are cool and not accessible with a wheelchair or pushchair. Weather can close the belfry, so do not build the day around the view. A short ground-level architecture walk, or returning to your accommodation earlier, are fallbacks that need no booking.

INDOOR OPTIONS

Where can you go indoors in Arras on a rainy Advent day?

The guide names a few indoor options, each with its own conditions. None of them is a waiting room you can walk into spontaneously.

UNDERGROUND

The Boves

The Boves are former quarry spaces beneath the centre, later used as cellars and storerooms. Visits are guided, last about 45 minutes and start from the tourism office in the town hall on Place des Héros. French and English are listed. Reach reception ten minutes early and bring warm clothing. The Boves are cool, closed on 25 December and not accessible with wheelchairs or pushchairs.

REMEMBRANCE

Wellington Tunnels

The Carrière Wellington is a First World War remembrance site about soldiers' lives underground before the Battle of Arras on 9 April 1917. The visit combines a guide, an audio guide and a film. Published durations differ, so confirm the length when booking. Warm clothing is recommended. Choose it because the subject interests you, not only because of a shower.

MEALS

A planned meal

On a wet day, a meal can become the centre of the afternoon. Reserve a table if you can, and check how the time fits your tour and your train home. The tourism office mentions andouillette among the region's foods; ask how a dish is prepared before ordering. City-centre shops and cafés keep their own hours, separate from the market's timetable.

PLAN B

How do you adapt an Arras market visit to rain and cold?

Changing the order of the day often works better than adding more stops.

SHORTER

One area of Grand Place

Shorten the outdoor circuit first. One selected part of Grand Place can be enough on a cold evening. Choose a single theme for your walk, such as one gift or one thing to taste, and leave the rest. Return later only if the weather and your energy allow. Planning one break in advance helps more than circling the stalls out of habit.

BELFRY

Do not count on the view

Bad weather can interrupt belfry visits, and the ascent is unavailable from 2 to 27 November anyway. If it is closed, a short architecture walk at ground level still works: Place des Héros, Rue de la Taillerie and Grand Place are close together. Look at a gable or an arcade, then compare it again after dark.

GOING BACK

An earlier return

Returning to your accommodation earlier can be the right decision. Note your way back before you set off. The free Citadine shuttle runs Monday to Saturday until 8 pm, roughly every twelve minutes, but not on Sundays or public holidays. In heavy rain, that limit matters more than usual, so decide in the afternoon how you will get home.

PLAN

A rainy afternoon in Arras: a sample plan

A calm sequence built around one booked visit and a meal. Adjust it to your tour time and train.

  1. 12:00

    Arrive and get your bearings

Start at Gare d'Arras on Place du Maréchal Foch and save your return connection.

  2. 13:00

    Lunch indoors

Sit down for a warm meal near the central squares and leave time before your tour.

  3. 14:30

    Boves tour

Be at reception in the town hall ten minutes before your booked departure. Allow about 45 minutes.

  4. 16:00

    Short market circuit

Walk along Rue de la Taillerie to Grand Place and see one area of the market.

  5. Evening

    Head back in good time

Take a hot drink, then return to the station or your room before the weather and the hour make it harder.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What if it rains at the Arras Christmas market?

The market on Grand Place is outdoors, so shorten your circuit and plan a warm meal as the main break. If you want an indoor visit, book the Boves or the Wellington Tunnels in advance. Neither works as a spontaneous shelter. A short ground-level walk and an earlier return are simple fallbacks that need no booking.

Are the Boves in Arras a good rainy-day option?

They can be, if the subject interests you. The guided visit lasts about 45 minutes and starts at the town hall on Place des Héros. The Boves are cool, so wear warm clothing. They are not accessible with wheelchairs or pushchairs, and they may not suit anyone uncomfortable in confined underground spaces. They are closed on 25 December.

Is the belfry in Arras open in bad weather?

Not necessarily. The tourism information says bad weather can interrupt visits, and a clear view cannot be guaranteed. The ascent is also unavailable from 2 to 27 November. Check visiting times on the day and keep a ground-level architecture walk as an alternative.

Is the fine arts museum in Arras open as an indoor alternative?

The guide does not include it. A tourism magazine from 2024 describes the collection galleries in Saint-Vaast Abbey as closed for an extended period during redevelopment, and no confirmed reopening date was available at the time of research. Check the current situation yourself if it matters to your plans.

What should I wear to the Arras Christmas market in winter?

Choose layers you can adjust, shoes that suit your planned walks and easily stowed rain protection. Warm clothing is recommended for both the Boves and Wellington. Check the forecast shortly before leaving. A winter illustration on a poster promises neither snow nor a particular temperature.
