WEEKEND TRIP · ANNABERG-BUCHHOLZ · ADVENT 2026
Annaberg-Buchholz Christmas market weekend: arrival, where to stay and a 2-day plan
Two days give you time for the market, the old-town churches and one booked tour without rushing. Arrive by train via Chemnitz on the Erzgebirgsbahn, by regional bus or by car, and choose your weekend by the event you want to see.

How do you plan an Advent weekend in Annaberg-Buchholz?
Choose your weekend first: the first Advent weekend brings the one-day Buchholz market on 28 November and stollen day on 29 November, while the final Advent weekend is shaped by the miners' parade on Sunday 20 December. Travel by train via Chemnitz to Annaberg-Buchholz unterer Bahnhof, or by car to central car parks such as Kätplatz. Spend day one on the market and the Bergkirche nativity scene, and day two on a booked museum or mine visit. If you stay until Monday, the Erzgebirgsmuseum and the Frohnauer Hammer both list Advent Monday opening.

How do you get to the Annaberg-Buchholz Christmas market?
The railway station, the bus station, the market and your accommodation are different arrival points. Plan the final stretch as part of the journey.
Erzgebirgsbahn via Chemnitz
The town describes the rail connection via Chemnitz on the Erzgebirgsbahn. Annaberg-Buchholz unterer Bahnhof is an important reference point for the market. Enter your actual destination in the journey planner and check the walk from the station separately, as slopes and winter weather affect how long it takes.
Regional and city buses
Regional buses serve the bus station. In town, RVE city-bus route A links the market and Buchholz, and route B runs between Frohnau and the upper town. Route D is suspended until an expected 6 January 2027, and several timetables end on 12 December 2026. Use VMS or RVE with your travel date.
Car parks and clearances
Kätplatz is listed as a central car park, with official walking times of ten to fifteen minutes to the old town. Garage clearances are 1.80 metres for Altstadt I, 2.10 metres for Altstadt II and 1.95 metres for the Markt garage. The operator's machines do not accept EC cards, so check payment options before you leave the car.
Where should you stay for an Annaberg-Buchholz market weekend?
The right place to stay depends on how you want to end your evening. The guide does not recommend specific hotels, but it does list what to check.
Close to the market
If you want to walk back after the market closes at 20:00 on Saturday, check the actual route from the square to the accommodation entrance, including slopes and lighting. A short distance on a map says little about the walk in the dark with purchases in hand.
Further out
Staying in another district needs a suitable evening connection or an alternative arranged in advance. The town name alone tells you little about how easy the return will be. Check the bus timetable for your exact date, as several timetables change during the season.
Staying for 20 December
An overnight stay reduces time pressure on parade day, but it does not solve access, luggage or arrival arrangements during the event. Ask your accommodation about check-in, possible traffic restrictions and access to its parking, and arrange luggage storage if you plan a museum visit after check-out.
Which Advent weekend suits your trip to Annaberg-Buchholz?
Each weekend has its own focus and needs different routes and reservations.
First Advent weekend
Saturday brings the one-day Buchholz market and the opening of the Wichtel children's activities at 13:30 in Annaberg. Sunday has the stollen-cutting at 13:00 on the market stage. Confirm the Buchholz venue and hours before building a two-market day, and keep Annaberg as the flexible part of your plan.
Miners' Advent weekend
Sunday 6 December focuses on mining traditions, with miners' music on the stage, a service at 16:00 in St. Annenkirche and a procession to the Bergkirche. It suits travellers who prefer music and worship to a large procession, and it falls two weeks before the grand parade.
Parade weekend
The grand miners' parade begins at 13:30 on Sunday 20 December and gives the whole day its structure. Plan the day backwards from your return connection. If you stay until Monday 21 December, a reserved Advent mine tour or the Frohnauer Hammer can fill the last morning.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get to Annaberg-Buchholz by train?
The town describes the rail connection via Chemnitz on the Erzgebirgsbahn, with Annaberg-Buchholz unterer Bahnhof as an important arrival point for the market. Check your exact connection in the journey planner for your travel date, and plan the walk from the station to the market or your accommodation separately.
Is one day enough for the Annaberg-Buchholz Christmas market?
One day works well for the market, the miners' nativity scene and a break. A weekend gives you time for a booked mine tour or museum visit as well, without rushing. On parade day, an overnight stay reduces time pressure, but you still need to plan access and luggage.
Where can I park for the Christmas market in Annaberg-Buchholz?
The town lists Kätplatz as a central car park and several garages: Altstadt I with 1.80 metres clearance, Altstadt II with 2.10 metres and the underground Markt garage with 1.95 metres. The parking operator's machines do not accept EC cards. For parade day, check the current 2026 rules rather than older fee exceptions.
What can I do on an Advent Monday in Annaberg-Buchholz?
The Erzgebirgsmuseum and the Frohnauer Hammer both list opening on Advent Mondays. On 30 November and 7, 14 and 21 December, special traditions tours in the 'Im Gößner' mine are announced at 12:00, 13:30 and 15:00 and require a reservation. The expected adult price of €8 was still provisional.
