In short: For a first visit without a car, stay in Westerland, where the station and the main bus routes meet. Choose Keitum or the eastern villages for quiet lanes and the Wadden Sea, Wenningstedt or Kampen for the cliffs and heath, and List or Hörnum when you want the quieter ends of the island.

Sylt is about 38 km long, and its settlements differ in pace, beach access and evening options. Your base decides how much time you spend on buses.

Westerland: the practical base

Westerland has the station, shops, the promenade and the main bus routes to List and Hörnum. It is the liveliest place on the island and the easiest with luggage. If you want quiet nights, ask about the room's position before booking.

Keitum, Archsum and Morsum: the eastern villages

The east faces the Wadden Sea. Keitum has thatched captains' houses, the Sylt Museum and St. Severin; Morsum has its cliff and heath. Keitum and Morsum have their own train stops. For beach days on the west coast, you will need the bus.

Wenningstedt and Kampen: cliffs and heath

Between Westerland and List, Wenningstedt and Kampen put the Rotes Kliff, the Uwe-Düne and the Braderuper Heide close by. Line 1 links both with Westerland and List.

List, Rantum and Hörnum: the quiet ends

List in the north has the harbour and the Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten; Hörnum in the south has its lighthouse and the southern tip. Rantum lies between the North Sea and the Rantumbecken. These places have fewer evening options and longer bus rides to the station, so they suit longer stays.

Before you book

  • Check the walk to the nearest bus stop and the lines that serve it.
  • Ask whether the guest card is issued by your host and what it covers.
  • Add final cleaning, parking and travel to the room price when you compare offers.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay on Sylt for the first time?

Westerland, because the station and the main bus routes start there and every other part of the island is one bus ride away.

Which part of Sylt is quietest?

The eastern villages such as Keitum and Morsum, and the far ends at List and Hörnum, are quieter than Westerland.

Do I need a car on Sylt?

No. Buses link Westerland with List, Hörnum and the eastern villages, and the island is flat enough for cycling, although wind can make rides harder.

Compare in detail

Where to Stay on Sylt compares all five areas with sheets for three accommodations. The Sylt Travel Guide covers all twelve settlements in 100 topic pages, and the Sylt planning page shows a three-day outline. The novel A Room for Winter looks at the island from the side of the people who prepare those holiday flats.
