For a first stay in Huế, the south bank of the Perfume River around Lê Lợi, Phạm Ngũ Lão and Võ Thị Sáu streets is the most practical base: many hotels and restaurants, and a 20–30 minute walk to the Imperial City. Inside the Citadel you sleep in quieter streets close to the sights. Kim Long and Vỹ Dạ offer garden houses and riverside homestays for a slower stay, and Thuận An beach suits a few days by the sea. Our Where to Stay in Huế guide compares the areas in more depth; the Huế guides are available in English, Spanish and German.

South bank centre (Lê Lợi and around)

The modern centre on the south side of the river, between the Trường Tiền bridge, Huế railway station and the backpacker streets around Phạm Ngũ Lão.

  • Good for: first visits, short stays, travellers without a car, evenings out.
  • Places to stay: everything from hostels and guesthouses to large riverside hotels.
  • Pros: many restaurants with English menus, cafés, travel agencies and easy Grab pickups. Riverside walks along Lê Lợi. Huế station and the airport road are close.
  • Cons: the backpacker streets can be loud until late. You cross the river to reach the Citadel, either on foot over a bridge or by short Grab ride.

Inside the Citadel

The walled old capital on the north bank. Outside the Imperial City itself it is a residential area with lakes, small temples and local streets.

  • Good for: travellers who want to be close to the main sights and enjoy quiet evenings.
  • Places to stay: small hotels, guesthouses and family homestays.
  • Pros: you can walk to the Imperial City early, before the groups. Local eateries and markets around Đông Ba are close. Calm streets for cycling.
  • Cons: fewer restaurants and bars in the evening. Some parts of the area can flood during heavy rain in the autumn.

Kim Long

A village area along the north bank west of the Citadel, on the road to Thiên Mụ Pagoda.

  • Good for: a slower stay, couples, travellers who like gardens and quiet.
  • Places to stay: garden houses (nhà vườn), traditional homes with walled gardens, some of them now guesthouses, plus small boutique hotels.
  • Pros: close to Thiên Mụ and the river, with an older, greener feel than the centre.
  • Cons: you need a bicycle, Grab or the hotel's transport for most trips. Evenings are very quiet.

Vỹ Dạ

A riverside area east of the centre, on the way towards the coast.

  • Good for: travellers who want riverside villas or homestays within 10–15 minutes of the centre by car.
  • Pros: calm, with some of the city's older riverside houses.
  • Cons: fewer services within walking distance.

Thuận An and the coast

The beach about 13–15 km north-east of the centre, between the sea and the Tam Giang–Cầu Hai lagoon.

  • Good for: combining sightseeing with beach days, mainly in the dry months of roughly April to August.
  • Pros: sea, seafood and a different side of the region.
  • Cons: 30–40 minutes to the Imperial City by car. In the rainy season the sea is rough and the area feels empty.

Which area for which trip

  • 1–2 nights: south bank centre or inside the Citadel.
  • 3–4 nights: start in the centre, then move to Kim Long for a slower end.
  • Families: a hotel with a pool on the south bank, or a larger homestay in Kim Long.
  • Rainy season (roughly September–December): a hotel in the south bank centre with upper floors and its own restaurant is the safest choice.

Plan B

If the area you want is fully booked, stay on the south bank close to the river and use Grab for everything else. Distances in Huế are short; most rides within the city take 5–15 minutes.

What to check before you book

  • Exact location: look at the map, not the name. A hotel called "Citadel" may be outside the walls.
  • Floor and lift: in flood months, an upper-floor room is more comfortable. Small hotels may have no lift.
  • Air-conditioning: essential from May to August.
  • Bicycles and transport: many guesthouses lend bicycles or arrange cars for the tombs.

Most hotels in Huế can also book a car for the tombs, a boat on the Perfume River or a lagoon tour. Compare their price with an agency on the street before you agree, and ask what is included, such as waiting time, tickets or a guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay inside the Citadel or on the south bank in Huế?

The south bank has more choice in hotels and restaurants. Inside the Citadel is quieter and closer to the Imperial City. For a first stay, most people pick the south bank.

How many nights should I stay in Huế?

Two nights are the minimum for the Imperial City and the main tombs. Three nights give you time for the river, food and a buffer for rain.

What is a garden house in Huế?

A nhà vườn is a traditional home set in a walled garden, typical of Kim Long and parts of the Citadel. Some are open to visitors, and a few are guesthouses.

Choose your base

Where to Stay in Huế compares the areas, and the Huế Airport to Hotel Guide covers how to reach them from Phu Bai or Đà Nẵng. Both are available in English, Spanish and German. All titles are in the Huế travel guides collection.
