In short: Stay in Tegernsee town or Gmund if you arrive by train, because both have a station. Choose Bad Wiessee for calm lake days on the western shore, Rottach-Egern for the Wallberg and the southern end, and Kreuth when mountain walks are the focus.

Tegernsee town

The town on the eastern shore has the station, the former monastery with St. Quirinus, the Herzogliches Bräustüberl and a boat landing. It is the most practical base without a car.

Gmund

Gmund at the northern end has its own station and is quieter. It suits walks along the Mangfall, the paper history of Gmund Papier and the path to Gut Kaltenbrunn.

Bad Wiessee

The spa town on the western shore has promenades, the Jodschwefelbad and boat connections across the lake. Check the bus or boat link to the station before you book.

Rottach-Egern

In the south, Rottach-Egern puts the Malerwinkel, St. Laurentius, the Wallbergbahn and the paths into the Rottach valley close by. Plan the bus to the station for arrival and departure.

Kreuth

Further into the mountains, Kreuth suits walkers heading to Siebenhütten or Wildbad Kreuth. Evenings are quiet, and you will rely on buses or a car.

Before you book

  • Ask whether your host issues the guest card and whether the TegernseeCard is available.
  • Check the walk to the nearest bus stop or boat landing.
  • Add parking and included services to the room price when you compare offers.
