The Magic Garden in the Samui hills: the steep road, 4x4 tours or a driver, entry costs, what to wear and what to combine it with.
Thoughtful routes, remarkable places and stories for the road. Find a fresh perspective and travel at your own pace.
Skip to the article ↓The Secret Buddha Garden, also called the Magic Garden or Tanim Magic Garden, is a small sculpture garden high in the hills of central Koh Samui. You reach it on a steep, partly rough road, so most visitors go with a 4x4 tour or a driver rather than on a scooter. The visit itself takes 30–60 minutes; with the drive and a viewpoint stop, plan a half day. Our Koh Samui Offline Place Guide includes Na Muang Waterfall and other key stops with notes, so you have the details on your phone when signal drops in the hills.
A local fruit farmer, Nim Thongsuk, started building the garden in the 1970s on his family land in the hills. Over the following years he added stone and concrete figures: Buddhas, deities, musicians, animals and scenes from everyday life, set among rocks, a small stream and tropical trees. He kept working on it into old age.
The result is quiet and a little strange: moss-covered figures in the shade, the sound of water, and cooler air than on the coast. It is not a temple, so the atmosphere is relaxed, but it is a personal and religious place. Treat it with the same respect.
The garden lies in the centre of the island, roughly between Lamai and Nathon, at the top of a narrow mountain road.
Travel time from Chaweng or Lamai is roughly 30–50 minutes by car, depending on your start point and the road conditions.
Prices change and vary by operator. Compare two or three before you book.
The garden is a short visit, so pair it with something nearby:
A sensible order for a half day: leave around 08:30, garden first while it is cool and quiet, then the waterfall, lunch in Lamai.
If you come with a tour, ask how long you get at the garden itself. Some 4x4 tours stop for only 20 minutes before moving on to the next point. If you want more time for photos or simply to sit by the stream, a private driver gives you that freedom. Late morning is the busiest time; very early or mid-afternoon is quieter. Light in the garden is soft because of the trees, which makes it a good place for photos without harsh shadows, even at midday.
There are small stalls near the entrance selling drinks and snacks, but don't rely on them for a meal. Eat before you go up or plan lunch back on the coast.
If you like quiet places, sculpture or simply getting into the hills, yes. It is small, so combine it with Na Muang waterfall or a viewpoint to make the trip worthwhile.
Experienced riders do on dry days, but the road is steep and rough. Beginners and anyone after rain should use a 4x4 tour or a driver.
30–60 minutes is enough for most people. Add travel time and another stop for a half-day outing.
Keep Na Muang Waterfall and the island's other key stops in one place with the Koh Samui Offline Place Guide, and fit the trip into a full day with the Koh Samui Itineraries. Both come in English, Spanish or German.
Travel times and prices are planning estimates. Check current conditions and operators before you go.
