A weekday visit to the Quedlinburg Christmas market works well if you follow the opening hours. From Monday to Thursday, Marktplatz opens from 11:00 to 20:00, but Mathildenbrunnen only from 15:00 to 20:00. The courtyards are closed on weekdays and the castle museum shuts on Mondays, so the best order is Old Town first and New Town later. All weekday and weekend hours are listed on our Quedlinburg Christmas market 2026 page.

What is open from Monday to Thursday

  • Marktplatz: 11:00–20:00, from 25 November to 22 December.
  • Mathildenbrunnen: 15:00–20:00, from 27 November to 21 December.
  • Castle museum: Tuesday to Thursday 10:00–16:00, closed on Mondays.
  • Living Advent Calendar: departure from Finkenherd 1/2 at 16:30 from 1 December.
  • Advent courtyards and Fachwerkmuseum: not open on weekdays; they belong to the first three Advent weekends.

A weekday trip is therefore a visit with its own character rather than a smaller version of a courtyard weekend. Plan around what is actually open and leave room for a walk through the town.

The four-hour route

The guide's weekday route fits the weeks when both markets overlap:

  1. 14:00, Marktplatz: get an overview of the market and eat something. If you are visiting together, agree on a meeting point at the edge of the square.
  2. 15:00, the Old Town: walk through the publicly accessible streets without expecting courtyard events. Choose a short walk to suit your interests and the weather.
  3. 16:00, Mathildenbrunnen: continue to the winter market in the New Town, using a current map. Allow time to enjoy the light installation.
  4. 17:00, a break and a final choice: finish with an indoor break or a particular purchase. Check restaurant opening and table availability beforehand.
  5. 18:00, head back: the route ends in the centre. Add the walk to the station or car park to your own plan.

The times are planning blocks, not measured walking times. On Monday 21 December, the Mathildenbrunnen market closes at 18:00, so move it earlier in the route on that day.

If you arrive before 14:00

Add an open cultural venue or lunch before the route. From Tuesday to Thursday, the castle museum on Stiftsberg opens from 10:00 to 16:00, with last admission 45 minutes before closing. It reopened on 3 October 2026 with a new exhibition about the women's religious foundation. On Mondays it is closed, so do not count on it for your morning.

A timber-framing walk is another option that works on any day. Choose a short stretch and compare ground floors, upper storeys and roofs. You do not need technical terms to notice differences.

Combining the route with the Advent Calendar

From 1 December, the Living Advent Calendar sets off from Finkenherd 1/2 at 16:30. If you want to join, swap the 16:00 New Town block for the walk to Finkenherd and visit Mathildenbrunnen afterwards, or the other way round on a day when you have more time. Doing both in quick succession can make the late afternoon rushed. The guide gives no confirmed finishing time for the calendar walk.

Monday, Friday and the weekend

Monday can suit a relaxed market visit, as long as you plan without the castle museum. Friday already follows weekend hours at Mathildenbrunnen, which opens from 11:00 to 22:00, and Marktplatz stays open until 22:00. A weekend gives you more flexibility but not necessarily smaller crowds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the courtyards on a weekday?

No. Advent in den Höfen runs only on 28–29 November, 5–6 December and 12–13 December.

Why does Mathildenbrunnen open so late on weekdays?

The organiser announces trading from 15:00 from Monday to Thursday. An early visit on those days would miss the stalls.

Is a weekday visit worth it?

Yes, if you want the markets and a walk rather than the courtyards. The two central markets and the castle museum from Tuesday give enough for an afternoon.

The weekday route and six more day plans are in the Quedlinburg Christmas Markets 2026 guide (PDF).
