In short: Take the BRB regional train (RB57) from Munich via Holzkirchen. It stops in Gmund at the northern end of the lake and ends at Tegernsee station in the town on the eastern shore. Get off at the station closest to your accommodation, then continue by bus or boat to Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern or Kreuth.

The trip is popular on weekends, so the station you choose and the onward connection matter more than the train itself.

The train from Munich

The BRB runs from Munich via Holzkirchen into the Tegernsee valley. Check which part of the train continues to Tegernsee before you board, and look at engineering works and replacement buses for your travel date.

Gmund or Tegernsee station?

  • Gmund: at the northern end of the lake. Good for accommodation in Gmund and for walks along the Mangfall or to Gut Kaltenbrunn.
  • Tegernsee: in the town on the eastern shore, near the former monastery, the Herzogliches Bräustüberl and the boat landing.
  • Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern, Kreuth: no station of their own. The onward bus or boat decides which station is better.

The last stretch: buses and boats

Regional buses link the five lake towns and the trailheads. Boats cross between the landings in season; the 2026 summer timetable ended on 4 October, so check the current schedule. With heavy luggage, the bus is usually the simpler choice.

Guest card on the buses

The guest card includes scheduled buses within MVV zones 6 to 9 and rail travel between Tegernsee and Moosrain. It does not cover the whole journey from Munich, so you still need a ticket for the train. The TegernseeCard is a separate offer available only through participating hosts.

Plan the journey

Getting to Tegernsee plans the full trip from Munich and the last stretch to your accommodation. Getting Around Tegernsee by Bus, Boat & Bike covers the lake once you are there, and the Tegernsee planning page brings areas, a three-day outline and all guides together. For the train ride, the novel The Light on the Other Shore is set in a lakeside hotel.
