To reach the Lübeck Christmas markets by public transport, travel to Lübeck Hauptbahnhof and then check the last part of the journey to your accommodation or first market. For local connections, LüMobil offers journey planning and tickets, and the SWL Mobil Planer shows real-time information and disruptions. The Lübeck Christmas Markets 2026 travel guide (PDF) has a full chapter on arrival and getting around.

Arriving at Lübeck Hauptbahnhof

For an old-town visit, select Lübeck Hauptbahnhof as your arrival station. The guide gives no blanket journey time, because your starting point, travel date and any engineering works determine it. Check your own connection with a current planner rather than relying on a typical time.

If your train arrives late, a central market stroll is enough for the first evening. There is no need to catch up by adding more stops. Leave luggage first if you can: starting with free hands makes the evening easier, and Markt by the town hall is a good first landmark.

Buses and journey planners in Lübeck

For travel to a specific market, a current journey planner is more useful than a printed route number. Enter the actual venue as your destination, for example St. Petri, Koberg or Drehbrückenplatz.

  • SWL Mobil Planer: an interactive network map with real-time information, accessible-stop details and disruption notices.
  • LüMobil: journey planning combined with ticket purchases and service-change information.
  • Tickets: check the coverage and conditions of the ticket you buy. The mode of transport, route and validity period matter more than the ticket's name.

Is there a Christmas shuttle?

The research for the guide did not find a reliable 2026 Christmas-shuttle timetable. The city's Christmas page refers visitors to public transport but does not list specific services for an itinerary. Plan with the regular network. A special service published later may add an option, so check the city pages again closer to your trip.

Planning the return journey

Book your return to suit your actual day plan, not the other way round. A museum with timed tickets or a craft market that closes at 19:00 deserves its own block of time.

  1. Save two journeys: note the outward and the return trip, including the final connection.
  2. Keep an earlier option: useful if weather or tiredness shortens your visit.
  3. Check holidays separately: the timetable on 26 December may differ from an ordinary Saturday. Search with the actual date.
  4. Plan a drink: if your connection falls outside market hours, take something warm for the journey.

Longer Friday and Saturday opening until 22:00 at Markt does not replace checking your last connection home.

Going on to Travemünde

The seaside district hosts Schiff ahoi at Ostpreußenkai and inside the cruise terminal from 21 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Plan it as a separate outing with its own outward and return journey. If you are staying in the old town, include the walk from your accommodation to the stop.
