Short answer: A day boat from Cairns reaches the outer reef in about 1.5 hours, and certified divers usually get two or three dives. A three-night liveaboard goes up to about 240 km north to the Ribbon Reefs and Cod Hole, with 11 to 12 dives including night dives. It starts at around 2,500 AUD per person, while a reef day costs a fraction of that.
Cairns is the main port for trips to the Great Barrier Reef. Day boats leave here for the reefs off the city, and liveaboards stay out for several nights. Which one suits you depends mostly on how many days you have and how far out you want to go.
Most reef boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street, at the southern end of the Esplanade. According to the dive travel site Dive the World, dive day boats usually leave around 8:00 or 8:30 and return around 16:30 or 17:00. The ride to the outer reef takes about 1.5 hours each way.
Certified divers usually do two or three dives on such a day. If you are not certified, many boats offer a supervised introductory dive. You are back in town for the evening and can decide the next morning what to do next.
One drawback is that all day boats from Cairns visit similar reefs within range. Night dives are practically never part of a day trip.
On a liveaboard you sleep on board and dive from early morning into the night. These trips reach reefs that day boats cannot get to. The best-known targets from Cairns are the Ribbon Reefs along the edge of the continental shelf and Cod Hole, known for its large potato cod.
Two examples show how the short trips are set up. Spirit of Freedom's three-night trip leaves Cairns at noon on Thursday and travels about 240 km north to Cod Hole. It includes 11 dives, one of them at night. You return on Sunday with a flight of about one hour from Lizard Island.
Mike Ball reverses the direction. You fly to Lizard Island on Monday, do up to 12 dives including night dives, and sail back to Cairns overnight.
| Criterion | Day boat from Cairns | Liveaboard (3 nights) |
|---|---|---|
| Ride to the reef | about 1.5 hours each way | the boat moves north overnight |
| Dives | 2 to 3 per day | 11 to 12 in total, with night dives |
| Where | reefs within range of Cairns | Ribbon Reefs, Cod Hole |
| Price according to operators | much cheaper, varies by boat | from about 2,500 AUD per person |
| Flexibility | book day by day | fixed departure days |
The liveaboard prices come from the Spirit of Freedom and Mike Ball websites for the 2026/27 season. On top comes the Marine Park's Environmental Management Charge. According to the Reef Authority (GBRMPA) it is 8.50 AUD per person per full day and rises to 9 AUD on 1 April 2027.
A day boat suits you if you have only two or three days in Cairns, travel with non-divers or worry about seasickness. You can mix reef days with rainforest or a rest day. For new divers with a fresh Open Water card it is a good start.
A liveaboard is worth it if you want many dives in a row and care about the reefs far to the north. In June and July some liveaboards offer swims with dwarf minke whales. According to the International Whaling Commission, the number of permits is capped at nine, all held by operators in the Cairns and Port Douglas region.
Plan your flight home with care after a liveaboard. The Divers Alert Network recommends at least 18 hours before flying after multiple dives over several days, as set out in the DAN guidelines. Discuss the short flight from Lizard Island with the crew.
From November to May it is marine stinger season in tropical Queensland. Reef boats provide lycra suits, so wear one in the water.
Planning the dives: divefever, a dive-site atlas series by an SSI divemaster, is preparing a Great Barrier Reef volume in German. It covers the Ribbon Reefs and Cod Hole (German-language edition, coming soon).
About 1.5 hours each way by day boat, depending on the reef and the sea. Some pontoon trips take a little longer.
Yes, if your buoyancy is already good and you can manage several dives a day. For the first dives after your course, a day boat is more relaxed.
Usually not, because the boats are back in Cairns in the late afternoon. Night dives are part of the liveaboard programme.
That depends on the operator. Some include the Environmental Management Charge, others add it on top, so ask when you book.
For the days on land, from areas to trips into the hinterland, use the Cairns Travel Guide by Tabiara. All diving and travel topics around the reef are on Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.
Last checked: 29 October 2026. Prices, departure days and fees change, so check them with the operators and official sources before you travel.
