The Daintree and Cape Tribulation work as a long day trip from Cairns, about 2–2.5 hours each way by road to the Daintree River ferry and another 45–60 minutes to Cape Tribulation. If you want time for walks, a river cruise and the beach without rushing, stay one or two nights in the Daintree or in Port Douglas. The Cairns itineraries include a Daintree route with timing and a wet-weather alternative.
Our Cairns guides are available in English, Spanish and German; choose your edition on the product page.
The drive follows the Captain Cook Highway along the coast to Port Douglas, then inland past Mossman to the Daintree River. Approximate times by car:
North of Cape Tribulation, the Bloomfield Track is a 4WD road. Many rental agreements do not allow standard cars on it, and it can close after rain. Treat Cape Tribulation as the end point for a day trip.
As a day trip, you will spend 4–5 hours driving and see three or four stops. It works best if you leave Cairns by 07:00, pick Mossman Gorge or the river cruise rather than both, and turn back from Cape Tribulation by mid-afternoon to avoid driving the range road in the dark.
With one night north of the river, you can do the river cruise in the morning, the boardwalks at a slow pace and the beach in the late afternoon. Accommodation ranges from camping and eco-lodges to small resorts. Book ahead in the dry season.
From Port Douglas, the Daintree is about an hour closer than from Cairns, which makes a relaxed day trip easier.
Without a car, a full-day guided tour from Cairns or Port Douglas covers the main stops, usually in 10–12 hours with pickup.
In the wet season, roughly December to April, heavy rain can flood roads and close the ferry or some walks. Check road conditions and the ferry status on the morning of your trip. If the far north is out, stay closer: Mossman Gorge (if open) and Port Douglas, or switch to the Cairns Botanic Gardens and the Esplanade.
Yes, but it is a long day with 4–5 hours of driving. Leave early, limit the stops, and do not drive the range road after dark.
No. The sealed road reaches Cape Tribulation. You need a 4WD only for the Bloomfield Track further north, and many rental cars are not allowed on it.
Swimming is not recommended because of crocodiles and, in the warmer months, stingers. Follow local signs and advice.
The Cairns itineraries place the Daintree in multi-day plans, and Where to Stay in Cairns compares Cairns, the northern beaches and Port Douglas as a base. All titles are in Cairns Travel Guides.
Times and prices are planning estimates, not timetables or guaranteed prices. Check road conditions, the ferry and official park information before you go.
