To combine Château Montbéliard Wurtemberg with the Christmas market, visit the castle first on a Wednesday to Sunday, ideally in the morning at a weekend when it opens at 10:00. Allow one and a half to two hours, keep in mind that last admission is 16:30, and save the market and lights for the afternoon and evening. Our Montbéliard Advent weekend page shows this as a two-day plan.

What the historical route covers

The route connects the castle’s development with the history of the city and the Württemberg dynasty. Fifteen rooms and multimedia stations provide the framework. Listed spaces include a music room, a science and technology cabinet and a baking oven, which present the castle as a former place of life and work.

The historical route is currently open, while other permanent exhibition areas are closed. Do not plan a visit to all castle collections based on older descriptions. An entry slot is not a guided tour: the regular visit is self-guided. The museum lists interpretation in German and English as well.

Winter opening and closures

  • Wednesday to Friday: 11:00–18:00
  • Saturday and Sunday: 10:00–18:00
  • Last admission: 16:30
  • Closed: Mondays and Tuesdays, plus 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January
  • Reservation: online booking is recommended

Choose an entry time that allows the full visit. The guide warns against treating the last admission as an ideal start. Someone who likes reading and using the multimedia stations needs more time than a visitor mainly interested in architecture, so discuss interests before you book.

Tickets and Beurnier-Rossel

The regular castle ticket costs €12 and, according to the museum, includes the Musée Beurnier-Rossel on Place Saint-Martin. The reduced rate is €9. Beurnier-Rossel alone is listed at €3, or €2 reduced. If you hold a castle ticket, check whether it already covers the second museum before paying again.

You do not need to see both on the same day. Two museums and an extensive market visit make a very full day, and the guide suggests spreading them over a weekend.

Practical points before you go

  • Luggage: suitcases are not allowed. Lockers for bags do not mean storage for any size. Arrange storage with your accommodation first.
  • Food: there is no catering area in the castle. Eat before or after.
  • Shopping: postpone bulky market purchases until after the visit.
  • Access: the route has 260 steps. Six rooms are described as wheelchair-accessible, and the lift does not serve every area. Pushchairs are not allowed.

A Saturday with castle and market

Route 2 in the guide works like this. In the morning, the historical route from 10:00 with your pre-booked slot. At midday, lunch in town, then a walk to Saint-Martin while there is still daylight to look at the architecture. In the afternoon, choose a market focus: crafts, regional food or the Swiss village. Leave room for a break before the lights at 16:30.

The illuminated castle esplanade enters the programme only from 28 November. On the first Saturday, 21 November, the initial switch-on is at 17:15. If you arrive in the afternoon, the guide suggests a shorter route without the castle, since rushing through reduces the visit you paid for.
