To reach the Annaberg-Buchholz Christmas market by public transport, travel by rail via Chemnitz on the Erzgebirgsbahn to Annaberg-Buchholz unterer Bahnhof, or by regional bus to the bus station. Several local timetables end on 12 December 2026 and city bus route D is suspended, so check connections for your exact date. The arrival chapter of our Annaberg-Buchholz Christmas Markets 2026 guide (PDF) covers each step.

By train: the Erzgebirgsbahn via Chemnitz

The town describes the rail connection via Chemnitz on the Erzgebirgsbahn. For the market, Annaberg-Buchholz unterer Bahnhof is the station to look for. International visitors arriving in Germany can plan the whole journey in one go, but the last leg deserves its own check: the station, the bus station, the market and your accommodation are four different points.

The guide stresses that a short distance on a map says little about how long the walk actually takes. Annaberg has slopes, and in December you may be walking in the dark, in rain or on slippery ground, possibly with shopping bags on the way back. Plan the final stretch from the station as part of the journey, not as an afterthought.

Regional and city buses

Regional buses serve the bus station. Within the town, the RVE city-bus network includes two routes that are useful for Advent visitors:

  • Route A: between the market and Buchholz, relevant for the one-day Buchholz market on 28 November.
  • Route B: between Frohnau and the upper town, relevant for a visit to the Frohnauer Hammer.
  • Route D: listed by the operator as suspended from 16 March 2026 until an expected 6 January 2027.
  • Route C: given as the alternative to route D, but it also needs checking for your travel date.

Published timetables have different validity periods, and several end on 12 December 2026. A timetable you saved in October is therefore not enough for later Advent dates.

How to plan your connections

  1. Use the planner with your date: enter your travel date and desired arrival time in VMS or RVE, rather than a general timetable.
  2. Enter the real destination: where possible, use the market square or your accommodation, not just the town name.
  3. Save the return: note the actual return connection and its departure stop before you start browsing.
  4. Allow time on event days: on 20 December, paths and access may be restricted around the parade route.

The market's regular closing time of 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays is no reason to miss your last reliable connection. Decide your leaving time before the evening starts.

Arriving for the big event days

On parade day, plan backwards from the last fixed time: your train or bus home. The parade's 13:30 start is known, but there is no guaranteed finish time. Agree on a meeting place away from the densest crowd and include the walk to your stop in the plan.

For 28 November, check the connection between Annaberg and Buchholz as well as your journey home. Route A links the two, but the Buchholz venue and hours should be confirmed first.
