Plan Uluwatu Temple as the main event of a day in the south, not as an extra: arrive around 14:00, give the temple and the cliffs separate time, stay into the evening only if you have booked a performance, and arrange your ride back before you set off. From Jimbaran, allow 45–90 minutes by car each way. The return in the evening traffic is the part most visitors underestimate.

The timings below follow the "Southern coast and Uluwatu" route in our Bali itinerary guide, which budgets IDR 600,000–1,200,000 for the day.

Uluwatu timing: a plan for the day

  • 11:00 Jimbaran Beach. Start with an unhurried meal. Pick a place with a clearly stated price basis and a table that suits the atmosphere you want.
  • 14:00 Uluwatu Temple. 45–90 minutes by car. This is the main visit.
  • 17:00 Performance slot. Only for a performance you have booked separately. Without one, leave earlier.
  • 19:30 Back in Jimbaran. Another 45–90 minutes by car.

The late start is intentional. The day is built around the afternoon at the temple and the drive home, not around fitting more in. If you skip the performance, use the spare time to return before peak evening traffic. A simpler southern day with time for the main visit is more comfortable than attaching Uluwatu to a full inland itinerary.

The temple and the cliffs

Treat the temple and the coastline as two things that each deserve attention. The site sits on a cliff, and the sense of exposure is strong. Use the permitted paths and stay well inside the barriers, even where the view tempts you closer. A dramatic outlook is not a reason to stop watching the ground and the people around you.

Keep your belongings secure and follow local instructions around wildlife. Take your time with the setting rather than moving quickly from one photo position to the next.

The evening performance: book it separately

An evening performance is a separate arrangement from the temple visit. Confirm its current booking and access conditions on their own, and do not assume your afternoon visit includes it. Allow time to find the correct area before it starts.

The 17:00 slot in our route only works if a performance is available and you have a place. If not, skip it without regret. Leaving earlier is the main alternative in the guide, and it gives you a much easier drive back.

Getting back from Uluwatu

Book the return before you go, not when you are standing in the car park. For a day with several stops, a driver is the sensible choice: agree the hours, the stops, the waiting time and any overtime before departure. Our Bali transport guide covers how to set that up.

  • Do not hang a distant dinner reservation on an optimistic exit time.
  • If you end the day with dinner on Jimbaran Beach, plan the ride home before you sit down.
  • Do not make a scooter the default on unfamiliar roads, least of all after dark.
  • If the day feels too full, drop a stop rather than looking for a faster vehicle.

Where to stay for an Uluwatu visit

Jimbaran and the Uluwatu area are not interchangeable. A bay-side stay in Jimbaran puts a beach and dinner close by. A cliffside property near Uluwatu can be beautiful but isolated, with stairs and transport needed to reach the sand. Compare the route to your preferred beach and to the airport separately. From the airport we plan roughly 30–75 minutes to Jimbaran. A southern base makes most sense when coastal time is a big part of your trip, not just one sunset added to an inland holiday.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Uluwatu Temple?

Our route arrives around 14:00 and keeps 17:00 for a separately booked performance. If you are not staying for one, leave earlier and avoid the heaviest evening traffic.

How long does it take to get from Jimbaran to Uluwatu?

We plan with 45–90 minutes by car in each direction. Treat that as a buffer for traffic, not a guaranteed journey time.

Can I visit Uluwatu Temple on a day trip from Ubud?

It is not a comfortable day. Ubud is already 90–180 minutes by road from the airport in the south, and Uluwatu works best as part of a southern day rather than attached to an inland itinerary.

Do I need to book the Uluwatu performance in advance?

Confirm the current booking and access arrangements for the performance independently of your temple visit. Without a confirmed place, plan to leave in the late afternoon instead.
