Best Time to Visit Bali: Seasons, Nyepi and the Uplands
Bali has wetter and drier periods, but region and elevation shape each day more. How the uplands differ, what Nyepi means for plans and how to swap days.

Ir al artículo ↓Short answer: there is no single perfect month for Bali. The island has wetter and drier periods, but the region you are in and its elevation shape a day more than the calendar does. Plan by area and by time of day, and check early if your dates overlap with Nyepi, which affects movement and services. A shower can reach the uplands while Sanur or Jimbaran stays bright.
Here is how we handle the seasons in our Bali guides, what changes when you drive inland, and how to keep a trip flexible without losing its best days.
Wetter and drier periods: what they mean for your plan
Bali is easier to understand once you stop treating it as one beach resort. The coast, the uplands and the eastern valleys ask for different kinds of days, and they do not always share the same weather. Before you settle on dates, settle on the shape of the trip: how many days on the coast, how many inland, and whether a boat excursion is part of it.
Whatever the period, three habits help:
- Start exposed walks early. The Campuhan Ridge Walk in Ubud is open to the sun. A cooler part of the day makes it more pleasant, and you can pick your turnaround point before you are tired.
- Keep a sheltered lunch in every plan. A seated meal under a roof gives the day a natural pause and somewhere to wait out rain.
- Check the current forecast before long drives or boat trips. A seasonal average written months ago tells you less about the next two days than the forecast and your accommodation do.
What changes in the uplands
The lake temple of Ulun Danu Beratan in Bedugul feels different from southern Bali. Cloud, water and cooler air can make the setting quiet even when the visitor areas are busy, and the view can change quickly with rain. Bring a light layer and go for its place in a highland day, not for a guaranteed reflection photograph. The nearby Bali Botanic Garden is a spacious alternative to a day of temple stops, but allow for rain and cooler temperatures there as well.
Distance is part of the weather question. Our planning buffer from Ubud to the first stop in Bedugul is 90–180 minutes, so a clear morning on the coast tells you little about conditions when you arrive. If severe weather affects the highlands, switch to an art day in Ubud instead.
At the Jatiluwih rice terraces in Tabanan, the colour and activity of the fields change with the farming work. Do not judge your visit against a photograph taken at another stage of cultivation. In heavy rain, drop the longer walk and ask your host if the 90–150-minute drive from Ubud still makes sense. A shorter visit on a permitted path can still be worthwhile.
The coast and the east in rain and heat
- Tanah Lot: access depends on local rules and sea conditions. Enjoy the view from the permitted areas, and if the coastal weather is poor, turn the half-day into a local meal and some browsing.
- Sanur: when rain arrives, a café and a sheltered meal replace the promenade walk. Walking and swimming are separate decisions; skip the swim when conditions are unsuitable.
- Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung: slow down on wet surfaces at these East Bali water gardens, and think about heat and the drive back before adding another distant stop.
- Gunung Kawi, Tampaksiring: in heat, the stair approach to the carved monuments matters more than the distance on the map. Save energy for the climb back out.
Boat excursions need a day of their own. Before sailing from Sanur Harbour, check the operator's weather policy along with the destination island and luggage conditions. Never put a weather-dependent crossing just before an important flight.
Nyepi: check before you book
Nyepi affects movement and services on Bali. If your dates overlap, get the current arrangements directly from your accommodation and from official notices, and do it before you book flights, transfers or excursions around that date. Do not assume a driver, restaurant or boat will run as normal because it did earlier in your trip. Ask the hotel what applies to guests, and keep that day simple.
A weather-proof way to build your Bali days
A Sanur morning, an Ubud afternoon and a sunset on the Bukit Peninsula can belong to the same holiday without belonging to the same day. Group your days by region, then give each outdoor day a swap you would actually enjoy:
- An Ubud introduction (Ubud Palace, Saraswati Temple, the ridge): if rain rules out the ridge, use an art museum and a long café break.
- Terraces and sacred water north of Ubud: choose only one temple if heat, ceremonies or access change the day.
- Southern coast and Uluwatu: skip the evening performance and return before the peak evening traffic.
Leave one day in the second half of your stay without a fixed plan. A cancelled highland day or boat trip then has somewhere to go, and you are not forced to squeeze it in before your flight. Our Bali day routes each come with an alternative for this reason.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth visiting Bali in the rainy season?
It can be, if you plan by region and keep sheltered alternatives ready. Rain in the uplands does not always mean rain on the coast, and a museum day in Ubud or a café morning in Sanur replaces an outdoor day without wasting it.
Do I need warm clothes for the Bali highlands?
Bring a light layer and a rain plan for Bedugul. Cooler air and cloud are part of the landscape around Ulun Danu Beratan and the Bali Botanic Garden, even when the coast is warm and bright.
What happens in Bali during Nyepi?
Nyepi affects movement and services on the island. Arrangements are set locally, so ask your accommodation and check official notices for your specific dates before booking anything around them.
What is the best time of day for sightseeing in Bali?
Start exposed walks such as the Campuhan Ridge early, keep a sheltered lunch in the middle of the day, and plan the drive back before evening traffic builds. Most of our day routes start at 09:00.
