Stinger season in Cairns runs roughly from November to May, when box jellyfish and Irukandji can be in the coastal water. In those months you should swim only inside stinger nets at patrolled beaches, in the free Esplanade Lagoon in the city, or wear a full stinger suit on reef trips. Cairns city itself has no swimming beach; its waterfront is tidal mudflats. The Cairns master guide covers where to swim safely through the year.

What stingers are and when they are around

"Stingers" is the local word for dangerous jellyfish in tropical north Queensland waters, mainly the box jellyfish and the much smaller Irukandji. Both can cause serious injury. They are most common in the warmer months, roughly November to May, but they can occur at other times too. Local authorities and lifesavers set the rules each season.

The risk is highest along the mainland coast and in shallow coastal water. On the reef and around the islands, stingers are less common but still possible, which is why reef operators provide stinger suits.

Where to swim in and around Cairns

  • Cairns Esplanade Lagoon. A large free saltwater swimming lagoon on the waterfront, with lifeguards, a sandy edge, shade and lawns. Check current hours and any maintenance closures. It is the easiest safe swim in the city.
  • Northern beaches with stinger nets. Several beaches north of the city, for example Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove and Ellis Beach, have netted swimming enclosures and lifeguard patrols in season. Swim only inside the nets, between the flags, during patrol hours.
  • Port Douglas. Four Mile Beach has a stinger net and patrols in season.
  • Freshwater swimming holes. Crystal Cascades near Redlynch and the upland lakes on the Atherton Tablelands are popular. Check signs for currents, flood conditions and crocodile warnings before you swim.

Nets reduce the risk of box jellyfish but may not stop the tiny Irukandji. Many locals wear a stinger suit even inside the nets.

Crocodiles: the other risk

Estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles live along the coast, in rivers, creeks, mangroves and estuaries, and they can turn up on beaches. Do not swim where signs warn of crocodiles, in rivers or creeks near the coast, or on unpatrolled beaches. Stay a few metres back from the water's edge at river mouths, and do not clean fish or leave food near the water.

Stinger suits on reef and island trips

  • Most reef operators include stinger suits (lycra full-body suits) with the trip, or rent them for a small fee.
  • Wear the suit with the hood and gloves if provided. It also protects against sunburn.
  • Follow the crew's briefing on vinegar stations and first aid. Vinegar is used on board for box jellyfish stings.

On Green Island and Fitzroy Island, check with staff on the day which areas are recommended and whether nets are in place.

A safe swimming day plan

  • Morning: swim at the Esplanade Lagoon before it gets busy, then walk the Esplanade boardwalk and watch the birds on the mudflats at low tide.
  • Midday: lunch in the city or a rest in the shade.
  • Afternoon: bus or drive 20–30 minutes north to Trinity Beach or Palm Cove. Swim inside the stinger net during patrol hours, then stay for dinner by the beach.

Before you go, check the patrol times for your beach on the day. Lifeguards can close a beach or net at short notice when stingers are found or the conditions turn, and the flags show what is open.

What to do if someone is stung

  • Get the person out of the water and call for help: 000 is Australia's emergency number.
  • Pour vinegar on the sting area if available, as advised by lifesavers. Do not rub it.
  • Watch for severe pain, sweating, breathing problems or a racing heart, which can start 20–30 minutes after an Irukandji sting. Seek medical help urgently.

Follow current first aid advice from lifesavers and health authorities; it is updated from time to time.

Plan B for a hot day

If the sea feels like too much of a risk, spend the hot hours at the Esplanade Lagoon, in a hotel pool, or in the shade of the Cairns Botanic Gardens. A reef trip with a stinger suit is often the best way to be in the water in the wet season. In the dry season, roughly June to October, the stinger risk is lower but not zero, and the nets on some beaches may be removed outside the season.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a beach in Cairns city?

No. The Cairns waterfront is mudflats. Swim in the Esplanade Lagoon or go to the northern beaches, about 20–30 minutes away.

When is stinger season in Cairns?

Roughly November to May, though stingers can occur outside these months. Check signs and lifeguard advice at every beach.

Is it safe to swim at Palm Cove?

In season, swim only inside the stinger net, between the flags, during patrol hours. Follow lifeguards and posted signs about stingers and crocodiles.
