Palm Cove is the more polished of the two: a short beachfront lined with old melaleuca trees, resorts and restaurants, about 30–45 minutes north of Cairns Airport by car. Trinity Beach is closer to Cairns, more relaxed and residential, with a smaller strip of cafés and apartments. Choose Palm Cove for a resort feel and Trinity Beach for a quieter, often cheaper base. Our where to stay in Cairns guide compares both with the city centre and other areas.
The northern beaches are a chain of suburbs and beaches along the coast north of Cairns: Machans Beach, Holloways Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove. Trinity Beach is roughly 15–20 km from the city centre, Palm Cove about 25–30 km. From the airport, plan about 25–40 minutes to Trinity Beach and 30–45 minutes to Palm Cove.
Palm Cove has one main street, Williams Esplanade, facing the beach. The trees along the beach give shade, and the jetty at the northern end is a good place for a morning walk. Resorts, day spas and restaurants line the street.
Trinity Beach is a long, sheltered beach with a park, a few cafés and restaurants and apartment complexes along Vasey Esplanade. It feels like a local beach suburb rather than a resort village.
Both beaches have patrolled sections and stinger net enclosures in the warmer months. Box jellyfish and Irukandji are a risk in tropical Queensland waters, mainly from about November to May. Swim only inside the net when it is installed and open, ideally between the flags when lifeguards are on duty, and wear a stinger suit. Crocodile warnings apply on this coast too. Read the signs every time; conditions and net status change.
Our article on stinger season in Cairns explains the details.
Most reef boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal in Cairns in the morning. From Palm Cove that adds 30–45 minutes each way, often with an earlier pickup. Some operators include transfers; others leave you to arrange them. If the reef is the main reason for your trip and you plan several boat days, the city centre is easier. If you do one reef day and want beach time the rest of the week, the northern beaches work well.
Budget: roughly AUD 90–190 per person including transport and meals.
Facilities, lifeguard patrols and stinger nets differ from beach to beach and by season. Check before you choose where to swim.
Pick Palm Cove if the stay is mainly about rest and you like to walk to dinner. Pick Trinity Beach if you want an apartment, a lower price and a shorter trip into the city. If you are undecided, split the stay: start in Cairns city for the reef and tours, then finish with two or three nights at the beach.
For a quiet beach stay, yes. For reef boats, shops and evening choices, Cairns city is more practical.
Yes, at patrolled sections and inside stinger net enclosures when they are in place and open. Follow the signs and lifeguards, and wear a stinger suit in the warmer months.
By Sunbus, taxi, ride-booking or tour pickup. Check bus times, especially in the evening.
The where to stay in Cairns guide compares the city, the northern beaches and other areas, and the Cairns getting around guide covers buses, transfers and car hire. Each comes in English, Spanish or German; choose your edition when you buy.
Times and prices are planning estimates. Check safety signs, stinger net status and bus timetables before you go.
