How to plan Na Muang Waterfall on Koh Samui: which waterfall to ask for, rain and safety checks, getting there without a scooter and a full southern day route.
Lugares especiales, rutas bien pensadas e historias para el camino. Descubre nuevas perspectivas y viaja a tu ritmo.
Ir al artículo ↓Make Na Muang Waterfall the first stop of a southern Koh Samui day: set off around 09:00 with a driver, check recent rain and the state of the access path before you commit, and treat it as a viewpoint visit rather than a swim. From there it is 25–45 minutes by car to the village of Hua Thanon, and the day ends on Lamai Beach. If the ground is wet or the access looks doubtful, skip the waterfall and start at Hua Thanon instead.
The plan below is the waterfall day from our Koh Samui Itineraries, plus what to agree with your driver first.
Na Muang sits in the forested interior of southern Samui, away from the beach roads where most people stay. The waterfall makes most sense together with that forest setting and with the path you actually take to reach it. Recent weather changes both: after rain the water looks different and the ground is in a different state.
The approach is short, but distance is a poor guide here. Wet rock and uneven surfaces can make a few minutes of walking more demanding than you expect. Look at where visitors are being directed on the day and follow that. Do not work out a route from someone else's photograph, and do not go looking for a harder path because the easy one seems too ordinary.
Swimming is a separate question, and our answer is not to plan around it. Changing water and slippery rock make a careful look from a sensible viewpoint the better default.
The stop in our route is Na Muang Waterfall 1. Saying "Na Muang" to a driver can cover different expectations, particularly about how much walking is involved. Sort this out before you leave the hotel:
Samui has no metro, so this is a road day. A scooter is not part of enjoying the island and makes a poor improvised fix if you rarely ride. With four stops, a driver for half a day or a full day is the calmer choice, and a songthaew will not always work like a fixed-price bus. Staying in Lamai keeps the drives short; our guide to where to stay in Koh Samui compares Lamai with Chaweng, Bophut and three other areas.
In our guide this is route 6, "Waterfall and southern village". It keeps the whole day in the south, so you are not crossing the island between stops.
Our planning budget for the day is THB 1,100–2,000. For lunch, eat on the coast you are already exploring: a simple Thai meal in the south beats driving across the island for a recommendation. If you order seafood, confirm the price and whether it is charged by weight.
Samui follows a Gulf of Thailand weather pattern, so a calendar written for Phuket is no help. Heavy rain can change excursions at short notice, and a forest waterfall is one of the first stops it affects. A 09:00 start also keeps the walking part of the day away from the midday hours.
When conditions are uncertain, use the alternative from the route card: begin at Hua Thanon and leave the waterfall out. The day still works with a village, a shrine, a meal and a beach. If you want more in the south, the "Lamai and the southern temples" route adds the Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations at Lamai, where you should keep away from wave-exposed edges, and Wat Ratchathammaram south of Lamai.
Do not plan on it. Wet rocks and changing water make a cautious viewpoint visit the safer default, and conditions depend heavily on recent rain. Seeing the falls does not require entering the water.
Our route starts at the waterfall at 09:00 and reaches Hua Thanon at 11:30, with a 25–45 minute drive in between. That leaves time for the approach and a slow look without rushing.
By road, with a taxi or a driver you have booked. Agree the fare before you get in, say clearly that you mean Na Muang Waterfall 1, and settle waiting time and the return in advance.
Only if access is clearly suitable. Rain changes both the water and the ground, and a short path can become hard work. If in doubt, start the day at Hua Thanon and keep the waterfall for another morning.
The waterfall route above, with times, driving legs, a budget range and a bad-weather alternative, is one of ten day routes in the Koh Samui Itineraries, along with ready-made 3, 5 and 7-day plans. For fares, drivers and songthaews, the Koh Samui Travel Confidence Kit covers getting around and common problems. To have Na Muang, Hua Thanon and Lamai on your phone without signal, take the Koh Samui Offline Place Guide. Everything for the island is in our Koh Samui Travel Guides collection.
