Kirchhellen and Grafenmühle: How to Spend a Day in Bottrop's Green North
A day in Bottrop's green north: Kirchhellen's village centre in the morning, a walk from Grafenmühle in the afternoon, with parking, buses and food tips.

Ir al artículo ↓Spend the morning in Kirchhellen's village centre, then move to the Grafenmühle walkers' car park on Alter Postweg for one chosen walk in the woods. Treat the move between the two as its own leg of the day, and pick a walk short enough to get back to your stop or car in daylight.
Kirchhellen is part of Bottrop, but it feels like a different town: fields, woodland and village streets instead of the denser south. It is often reduced to the place you drive through on the way to a theme park. Given a day of its own, it shows how varied Bottrop really is.
Why Kirchhellen deserves more than a drive-through
The northern part of today's Bottrop adds villages, farmland and forest to a trip that otherwise centres on spoil tips and the city. That contrast is one of the most rewarding parts of a longer stay. Don't build it into a postcard story of industrial town against rural idyll, though. Both are lived in, worked and changing. A field is a workplace, a village street carries traffic and the edge of the woods is not a car park.
Kirchhellen, Grafenwald and Feldhausen should each keep their own line in your plan. They are separate places, and an address that just says Bottrop can be handy for one of them and mean extra journeys for another.
Morning: Kirchhellen's village centre
Start with an ordinary walk along the central streets. Look at the shops, the places where people meet and how the main road relates to the quieter side areas. Keep the first loop small, find a calm spot for a break and buy what you need for the afternoon. Only then decide how far to walk.
Local history becomes clearer if you compare old and present-day centres. The site of the former village church is not the same as today's church site: the older church was destroyed by fire in 1917. A name like Alter Kirchplatz points to that history, not to the building you see now. Compare the Alter Kirchplatz with the area around St. Johannes on a current map and walk only on public routes. If you go inside a church, respect services and private grief, and take photos only where it is allowed and appropriate.
Midday: the transfer to Grafenmühle
Grafenmühle is a well-known starting point for walks into the forest, and the official tourism site names the walkers' car park on Alter Postweg as the start. That gives you a place, not a route. Decide before you arrive how long you want to walk, and if you plan to retrace your steps or follow a confirmed loop.
- Write down the full address. Grafenwald is a district, Grafenmühle is the excursion area, and a walking access point can be somewhere else again.
- Without a car, check the walk from the bus stop to the actual start point: pavements, crossings and the stop for your return.
- By car, park only in marked spaces and keep access roads clear. A full car park is not a reason to use forest tracks or verges.
- If the morning ran long, shorten the walk rather than cutting the journey home too fine.
Afternoon: one walk with a clear end point
At a popular spot, people wanting quiet and people out for a sociable afternoon meet at the same start. If you want a still walk, don't expect it right by the car park. Head off with a clear direction and find space on the permitted paths.
An out-and-back walk is often the underrated choice. You already know the ground on the way back, you can shorten it at any point and the view changes when you turn around. Sand, roots and wet stretches slow you down more than the distance suggests, so plan around the slowest reliable pace in your group. Focus on the woods and leave out a list of extra lakes. Heidhofsee and Heidesee are separate destinations with their own access, and linking them turns an easy afternoon into a much longer hike.
Food, weather and the way home
The tourism office lists both Kirchhellen and the Grafenmühle area among Bottrop's places to eat. Check opening times and, for a fixed meal, a reservation, but carry water and a snack anyway. A sudden closure shouldn't spoil the whole outing. With children, the playground at Kirchhellener Ring is a simple break.
In heavy rain or a storm, drop the forest part. Spend longer in the village and add an indoor option you have confirmed. Cyclists can check the guided tours run by ADFC Bottrop und Kirchhellen, but look closely at pace, length and requirements first.
Frequently asked questions
Where do you park for Grafenmühle in Bottrop?
The official tourism site names the walkers' car park (Wanderparkplatz) on Alter Postweg. Park only in marked spaces, and have another plan ready in case it is full.
Can I get to Grafenmühle without a car?
Yes, but check the whole chain. A bus into the district tells you nothing about the walk from the stop to the start point. Look up the stop for your return before you set off, and don't count on an unarranged pick-up.
Is Kirchhellen part of Bottrop?
Yes. Kirchhellen is the northern part of today's Bottrop, together with Grafenwald and Feldhausen. Its village centre and surrounding woods feel very different from the city's denser south.
Can I combine Kirchhellen with Movie Park on the same day?
We wouldn't. Plan either nature or a theme park after the village centre, not both as a rushed add-on. Movie Park in Feldhausen works better as a full day of its own.
