Ir al artículo ↓A Mount Batur sunrise trek means a hotel pickup around 02:00–03:00, a 1.5–2-hour climb in the dark with a local guide, and about an hour at the top before walking down in daylight. It is a moderate hike on loose volcanic gravel, not a technical climb, but the cold, the steep final section and the early start catch many people out. If you are staying in Ubud, it fits best before a rest day; our Bali Itineraries help you plan the days around it.
Gunung Batur is an active volcano in Kintamani in the north-east highlands, standing inside a large caldera with Lake Batur beside it. The summit is roughly 1,700 metres above sea level. From the top on a clear morning you look across the lake to Mount Abang and, further east, to Mount Agung.
How the trek works
- Pickup. Most tours collect you from Ubud between about 02:00 and 03:00. From the south (Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur) pickups are earlier because the drive is longer, often 2–3 hours.
- Start point. Treks begin from trailheads near Toya Bungkah or the Pura Jati area at the foot of the volcano. Guides are organised locally, and tour operators arrange this for you.
- The climb. Usually 1.5–2 hours up, starting around 04:00. The first part runs through fields and forest on a reasonable path. The last stretch is steep, loose and slow. Torches are normally provided.
- At the top. Sunrise is usually between about 06:00 and 06:30, depending on the season. Many tours serve a simple breakfast, sometimes eggs or bananas cooked in volcanic steam.
- The descent. 1–1.5 hours. Some routes pass the crater rim and steam vents. Back at the car around 08:30–09:30.
What it costs and what to check when booking
Prices vary widely depending on group size, pickup area and what is included. As a planning range, a shared group tour with transfer is often around IDR 400,000–900,000 per person, and private tours cost more. Before you pay, check:
- Whether hotel transfers, the guide fee, trail or entrance fees, breakfast and water are included.
- Group size per guide.
- What happens if the trek is cancelled because of volcanic activity or heavy weather.
- Whether add-ons such as a coffee plantation stop or hot springs are optional or built into the price.
- Cancellation terms if you feel unwell on the night.
Buy from an operator with clear written terms. If someone approaches you at the trailhead with a different price, stick with what you booked.
What to wear and carry
- Warm layers. At the summit before sunrise it can feel close to 10 °C or colder in wind, a shock after the coast. A fleece and a light windproof jacket are enough for most people.
- Shoes with grip. Trainers with a solid sole are the minimum. Sandals are a bad idea on volcanic gravel.
- Water. At least one litre per person.
- A small torch or headlamp as a backup.
- Cash for drinks or toilets at the trailhead and on the summit.
The trek suits people with ordinary fitness who walk regularly. If you have knee problems, the descent on loose ground is the hard part; walking poles help.
When to go and when it is not worth it
The dry season, roughly April to October, gives the best chance of a clear sunrise. In the wet season, roughly November to March, cloud often sits on the caldera and the path is muddier. You can still go, but treat the view as a bonus. Check the forecast the evening before and ask your operator about conditions.
Volcanic activity can close the mountain at short notice. Indonesian authorities set alert levels and exclusion zones, so check the current status before booking and again the day before.
How to plan the rest of the day
You will be back in Ubud around 10:00–11:00, tired and hungry. Keep the rest of the day light: a late breakfast, a nap, perhaps a massage. Do not plan a long driving day afterwards. If you want hot springs, some tours stop at the lake for a soak; it is easier to add this to the tour than to come back later.
Plan B: If the weather is bad or you would rather not trek, drive up to the Kintamani rim for a late breakfast with a view across the caldera. The road along the rim gives you the volcano and the lake without the climb, and you can combine it with Tirta Empul or Gunung Kawi on the way back.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Mount Batur trek hard?
Moderate. The climb takes 1.5–2 hours and the last section is steep and loose. People who walk or hike regularly usually manage well; take your time and stop when you need to.
Do I need a guide to climb Mount Batur?
Plan on going with a local guide. Treks are organised through the local guide system and tour operators, and you are not expected to walk up alone in the dark. Check the current rules when you book.
Is the sunrise guaranteed?
No. Cloud can cover the summit, especially in the wet season. A good operator will tell you honestly about conditions, but nobody can promise a clear view.
