When it rains in Lübeck, build the day around an indoor stop and keep the outdoor markets short. The craft markets at St. Petri and Heiligen-Geist-Hospital are held indoors, and the European Hansemuseum opens daily 10:00–18:00 except 24 December. Indoor craft markets
The three craft markets are the most festive way to stay dry, but each has its own window. Check that yours is running on your date.
St. Petri: 24 November to 20 December, daily 11:00–19:00. Admission €4; children under twelve enter free. Many stalls change on 7 December.
Heiligen-Geist-Hospital, Koberg 9: 27 November to 6 December, daily 11:00–19:00. Adults €4, school pupils and students €2, children aged 16 and under free.
Lübsche Wiehnacht at Schuppen 6: in the harbour warehouse on 21–22 and 28–29 November. A cafeteria serves waffles, cake and snacks. Hours and admission were not published at the time of research.
At the Hospital, only the church hall is accessible with a wheelchair, walking frame or pushchair. The long hall and vaulted area are not, which matters if you planned to spend the whole afternoon there.
The Hansemuseum as a fixed anchor
The European Hansemuseum is easy to plan on a winter day. The visitor page lists daily opening from 10:00 to 18:00, except 24 December. Standard adult admission to the permanent exhibition is €16 and includes the Burgkloster. Children and young people under 18 and students are among those with free entry.
Tickets are timed and become available online up to 14 days before the visit. Put the market after the museum if you have a fixed slot. A long break at a stall will then not make you late for admission.
Why St. Marien is not your plan B in 2026
St. Marien closes on 2 November 2026 for renovation, provisionally until May 2027. Older tourism summaries with winter opening hours do not reflect this. The church says tower and vault tours will continue, but they have their own dates and access requirements. The historical market at Marienkirchhof and Märchenwald beside the church are announced separately and still take place.
How to shorten the outdoor part
Give your itinerary a section you can drop without losing its purpose. A waterfront market, an extra square or a longer walk can go if the weather turns.
Indoor first: start with St. Petri, the Hospital or the museum.
One outdoor area: finish at Markt and Breite Straße rather than touring every square.
Keep Hafenglühen flexible: it sits at Drehbrückenplatz by the water and can feel exposed on a windy evening.
Protect purchases: keep delicate items dry, and take them back to your room before the evening stroll if possible.
Save an earlier return: an earlier connection is useful if the weather shortens the day.
Choose clothes and footwear for the current forecast and your planned time outdoors. It gets dark early in December, and wet cobbles are slower to walk on, so a shorter day is often the more pleasant one.
