Treat Lennox Head as the whole day, not one stop on a beach crawl: drive 25–45 minutes south from Byron, choose one coastal walk that suits the wind and sea, take a long lunch and be back at Main Beach in Byron around 16:30. You need a hire car, a booked driver or a tour, and our planning budget for the day is roughly AUD 65–140. No extra attraction is needed to justify the drive.

This is the Lennox Head route from our Byron Bay Itineraries, with the timing we use, how to get there, what to leave out and when to turn back early.

The day at a glance

  • Before 09:00 – the drive. Leave Byron early enough to allow 25–45 minutes on the road before you start.
  • 09:00 – a coastal walk. Pick it on the morning itself, once you know the wind, heat and sea conditions.
  • 11:30 – lunch. Make it long. A slow meal near the coast is half the reason for coming.
  • 14:00 – a last pause, then the drive back. Again 25–45 minutes.
  • 16:30 – Main Beach Byron Bay. Back in town with the evening free.

Read those times as a frame rather than a timetable. The order is what matters: walk while you are fresh, eat without watching the clock, and keep enough energy for the return. Our place notes for Lennox Head say it plainly: allow time to get back rather than adding every beach on the road.

Getting from Byron Bay to Lennox Head

Central Byron works on foot, but neighbouring towns need their own transport decision. You have three realistic options:

  • Hire car. Useful for regional days if you are comfortable and authorised to drive. Parking near popular beaches is limited and regulated, so read the signs on the day instead of relying on an old travel post.
  • Booked driver. Removes the parking and navigation work. Agree the pickup point and the return time before you set off.
  • Organised tour. Less flexible, but nobody in your group has to drive.

Do not build the day around a local bus you have not checked, and especially not for the trip back. The Byron Bay train is no help here either: it is a short local run between the town and the North Beach area. The Byron Bay Travel Confidence Kit covers these choices in more detail.

Choosing your coastal walk

The route deliberately does not prescribe one fixed track. The right walk is the one that suits the conditions and your energy that morning. Three things to settle first:

  • Walking route and driving approach are two different things. Know where you will park or be dropped off in relation to where the walk starts and ends.
  • Weather changes what is sensible. Heat, storms, surf and strong wind all count. Check NSW park alerts before a headland walk.
  • Swimming is a separate decision. Use current lifeguard advice and the flags on the beach. A good view says nothing about safe water.

If you spend time looking out to sea, keep expectations loose. Whale watching is seasonal, and wildlife sightings cannot be promised on any coast here.

What to leave out

  • A string of extra beaches. Every additional stop adds parking, walking and time in the sun, and pushes the drive back later.
  • Brunswick Heads on the same day. It lies north of Byron, Lennox lies south. In our routes they are two separate slow days.
  • A fixed plan you cannot change. If wind or rain makes the coast uncomfortable, return earlier. A café or gallery back in Byron and a long lunch can still make a good day when the sea is best watched from land.

Lennox Head, Brunswick Heads or the southern beaches?

All three are coastal days away from Main Beach, but they suit different moods:

  • Lennox Head: south of Byron, 25–45 minutes by car, a walk chosen for the conditions and a long lunch. About AUD 65–140.
  • Brunswick Heads: north of Byron, also 25–45 minutes, small-town streets and a riverside walk. About AUD 65–130. The calm look of the estuary is not a judgement about swimming safety.
  • Arakwal National Park and Tallow Beach: closer, with road transfers of about 20–40 minutes. Tallow is an exposed stretch better treated as a scenic walk than an automatic swim. About AUD 50–110.

If you only have room for one day out on the coast and want a real change of scene with a proper lunch, Lennox Head is the choice. If you would rather spend less time in the car, the southern beaches are the easier option.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Byron Bay to Lennox Head?

Plan 25–45 minutes by car each way. Traffic, parking and where exactly you start your walk decide which end of that range you get.

Can I get to Lennox Head from Byron Bay without a car?

Yes, with a booked driver or an organised tour. Do not assume a local bus will fit your day or get you back when you want, and the Byron Bay train only runs locally between town and the North Beach area.

Is Lennox Head worth a day trip from Byron Bay?

It is if you want a slower coastal day with a walk and a long lunch. If your aim is to see as many beaches as possible, you will spend most of the day parking and driving.

What should I do if the weather turns at Lennox Head?

Head back to Byron earlier. Check park alerts and current beach advice before you go, and keep a café or gallery in town as your fallback.
