For a Brunswick Heads day trip from Byron Bay, allow about 25–45 minutes by car each way, then spend the day on the town's streets and riverside with lunch in town. Do not add a string of beaches on the way back. Brunswick Heads works best as a slow small-town day with its own estuary atmosphere, not as a quieter copy of Byron.

It is one of the coastal days in our Byron Bay Itineraries, and the simplest of them: one town, one walk, one meal. Here is how we would plan it.

Getting there from Byron Bay

Brunswick Heads lies north of Byron. Plan on roughly 25–45 minutes by car before your first stop, and the same again for the return. Treat that as a planning window; traffic and parking decide where in the range you land.

  • Hire car: the easiest way to do this day on your own timing, if you are comfortable and authorised to drive.
  • Booked tour or driver: worth it if nobody wants to drive, or if lunch will include a drink.
  • Local bus: possible in principle, but do not assume a bus will fit your day or bring you back when you want. Check current services first.
  • Byron Bay Train: no help here. It is a short local line between the town and the North Beach area, not a regional service.

For a longer look at these choices, the Byron Bay Travel Confidence Kit covers transport and the usual problems around it.

What to do in Brunswick Heads

Come for the small-town streets and the riverside setting. The estuary gives you a very different kind of coastal pause from the exposed headland around Byron: water moving between town and coast, rather than open surf below a cliff.

Give yourself time to walk in the public areas along the water, look at how the town and the river sit together, and choose a place to sit for a while. A village meal and a manageable walk are enough for a complete outing. If you arrive expecting Byron's atmosphere in a smaller package, the town will feel underwhelming. Take it on its own terms and it makes a calm, pleasant day.

A simple plan for the day

Our route for Brunswick Heads uses four loose time anchors. They are not appointments; move them as the day needs.

  • 09:00, riverside walk: leave Byron early enough to allow the 25–45 minute drive, then start with a walk along the river while it is still quiet.
  • 11:30, lunch: eat in town. Book ahead if there is a particular place you want, especially in busy periods.
  • 14:00, the streets: an unhurried walk through town, then the drive back.
  • 16:30, back in Byron: finish at Main Beach, with the evening free.

Our planning budget for this day is roughly AUD 65–130, depending mostly on how you get there and how much you spend on lunch.

Swimming, weather and what not to add

The water

This is the part people misjudge. An estuary can look calm, but how it looks is not a judgement about swimming safety. Treat any swim as a separate decision based on the current conditions on the day, local signs and lifeguard advice, and check beach conditions before you go, for example on Beachsafe.

If the water is unsuitable, nothing is lost. Our alternative for this route is simply to keep the visit to the town streets and a good meal. The day was never built around a swim.

Bad weather

Heat, storms and strong wind can change what is sensible outdoors, so check the forecast before driving north. On an unsettled day, a shorter riverside walk and a longer lunch still make the trip worthwhile. If it looks properly wet, a café and long-lunch day in Byron itself may be the better call.

Don't overfill the day

The more common mistake is overfilling the day. Brunswick Heads looks close to other places on a regional map, and it is tempting to add stops on the way home. Do not add places just because they seem near after several other visits. Lennox Head, south of Byron, is a separate coastal day with a similar drive, and it deserves its own date rather than a combined loop.

Thinking of staying in Brunswick Heads?

The town is an alternative base with its own character. It works well if you want to spend time in this northern area, but it is not the same as staying within walking distance of Byron's beaches. Use a day trip to test the ordinary things: where you would eat, which walks you would actually do, and how many journeys your wider itinerary would need. If your plans keep sending you south to Byron, count those transfers honestly. Where to Stay in Byron Bay compares Brunswick Heads with five other bases.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Brunswick Heads from Byron Bay?

Allow roughly 25–45 minutes by car each way, depending on traffic and parking. That makes it an easy day trip, but you still need a car, a booked driver or a tour that fits your timing.

Can you swim at Brunswick Heads?

Only decide on the day. The calm look of the estuary tells you nothing reliable about safety, so follow current local guidance, signs and lifeguard advice, and check beach conditions first. If conditions are unsuitable, keep to the town and lunch.

Is Brunswick Heads worth visiting from Byron Bay?

Yes, if you want a slower small-town day by the water. A riverside walk and lunch are the visit. If you are looking for Byron's buzz or a full sightseeing programme, it is not the right day out.

Can I get to Brunswick Heads from Byron Bay without a car?

You can book a tour or a driver. A local bus may exist for your dates, but check current services and especially the return times before you rely on it. The Byron Bay Train does not go there.
