ADVENT 2026 · LÜBECK · RAIN AND WIND
Lübeck Christmas market in the rain: indoor options and a plan B
Rain and wind are normal in Lübeck in December, and the city has good indoor alternatives. The craft markets at St. Petri and Heiligen-Geist-Hospital and the European Hansemuseum give a wet day a solid core. The outdoor markets then become a shorter finish.

What can you do in Lübeck when it rains at Christmas?
Put an indoor stop at the centre of the day. St. Petri hosts a craft market daily 11:00–19:00 from 24 November to 20 December, and Heiligen-Geist-Hospital from 27 November to 6 December, each €4 for adults. The European Hansemuseum opens daily 10:00–18:00 except 24 December, with timed tickets at €16. Add a short outdoor market circuit afterwards if the weather allows. Note that St. Marien is closed for renovation from 2 November 2026, so it is not a spontaneous shelter.

Where can you go indoors at the Lübeck Christmas markets?
Three indoor craft markets and one museum have published dates or hours. Pick the one that is open on your day.
St. Petri craft market
Open daily 11:00–19:00 inside the church, with €4 admission and free entry for children under twelve. Its long season makes it the most reliable indoor craft stop. Many stalls change on 7 December, so a rainy day in the second half still brings a different selection.
Heiligen-Geist-Hospital
The craft market at Koberg 9 runs daily 11:00–19:00. Adults pay €4, school pupils and students €2, and children 16 and under enter free. With a wheelchair, walking frame or pushchair, only the church hall is accessible, which matters when you plan a long indoor stay.
European Hansemuseum
Open 10:00–18:00 with timed tickets, bookable online up to 14 days ahead. The €16 adult ticket for the permanent exhibition includes the Burgkloster. Those under 18 and students are among the groups with free entry. Give it a fixed block of time rather than squeezing it between markets.
How do you plan a rainy day at the Lübeck Christmas market?
A day with one clear main wish is easier to shorten. Decide beforehand which part can go if the weather turns.
Indoor first, outdoor last
Start with the craft market or museum and leave the outdoor stroll for later. If you have a timed museum slot, put the market after it so a long break does not make you late. The outdoor part can then be as short or as long as the weather allows.
Shorten the waterfront
Hafenglühen at Drehbrückenplatz sits by the water and can feel exposed on a windy evening. Choose a reachable indoor break nearby and keep the circuit flexible. A long sequence of outdoor squares is not needed when a shorter stay is more comfortable.
Not a rain shelter in 2026
St. Marien closes on 2 November 2026 for renovation, provisionally until May 2027. Tower and vault tours continue, but with their own dates and requirements. The markets around the church still run; a visit to the interior is simply not part of a normal day plan this year.

Frequently asked questions
What if it rains at the Lübeck Christmas market?
Switch to an indoor anchor and keep the outdoor stroll short. The craft markets at St. Petri (24 November to 20 December) and Heiligen-Geist-Hospital (27 November to 6 December) are both indoors and open 11:00–19:00. The Hansemuseum is another option with timed tickets. Afterwards, a short circuit at Markt is often enough.
Is there an indoor Christmas market in Lübeck?
Yes, the three craft markets are held indoors: St. Petri inside the church, Heiligen-Geist-Hospital on Koberg, and Lübsche Wiehnacht in the harbour warehouse Schuppen 6 on 21–22 and 28–29 November. Admission is €4 for adults at St. Petri and the Hospital; Schuppen 6 prices were not published at the time of research.
Can I visit St. Marien church in Lübeck in Advent 2026?
Not for a normal visit to the interior. St. Marien closes on 2 November 2026 for renovation, provisionally until May 2027. The church says tower and vault tours continue, but they have their own dates and access requirements. The Christmas markets around the church are announced separately and are not affected by this.
Is the Hansemuseum open over Christmas?
The visitor page lists daily opening from 10:00 to 18:00, with 24 December as the only exception named. Check the ticket calendar for your exact holiday date, because tickets are timed and become available online up to 14 days before the visit.
Which Lübeck Christmas market is most exposed to the weather?
Hafenglühen at Drehbrückenplatz sits by the water, so wind can be noticeable there. It is a separate destination from the maritime market on Koberg. On a stormy day, keep Hafenglühen short or leave it out and stay with the central squares and an indoor stop.
