Gare de Montbéliard on Place du Général-de-Gaulle is the central station and the easiest way to reach the Christmas market. Belfort-Montbéliard TGV is outside the city in Meroux-Moval, so a fast train there still needs a bus transfer, which current évolitY information lists as line D. Our page an Advent weekend in Montbéliard without a car builds a full plan around this.

Two stations, two different arrivals

The guide puts it clearly: the name on your ticket makes a real difference. A ticket to Belfort-Montbéliard TGV does not bring you into Montbéliard. You will need an additional transfer, with its own waiting time.

  • Gare de Montbéliard: in the centre, on Place du Général-de-Gaulle. Route 1 in the guide starts here and leads to the Temple Saint-Martin and the market.
  • Belfort-Montbéliard TGV: in Meroux-Moval, outside the city. Compare the full journey to Montbéliard, not just the time on the main train.
  • Acropole: an important name in the bus network. Save it alongside the station names if you combine rail and bus.

For travellers coming from further away, this is the main decision of the trip. A faster long-distance train can end up slower door to door once the bus connection is included.

Line D to Meroux-Moval

The évolitY network information lists line D as the connection to Meroux-Moval Gare TGV. One part of the event website still mentions THNS 4, which does not match the operator’s network information from August 2026. The guide follows évolitY, and so should your planning.

The operator describes daily service on line D. That does not confirm a particular connection with your train. For a late return, look at the bus departure, the arrival at the TGV station and your transfer margin together. The guide confirms no individual December departure, so check the actual stop, direction and time for your date.

The TER Christmas market offer

For selected journeys within Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, SNCF TER announces a Christmas market offer for 21 November to 24 December 2026. Sales open on 2 November.

  • Adult return fares: €6, €12 or €26, depending on the departure station
  • Children under twelve: €2
  • Conditions: online only, limited availability, no exchange or refund
  • Return: the offer page permits a return journey the following day
  • Exclusions: Île-de-France routes are excluded, and international journeys have their own conditions

This is a regional promotion, not a nationwide French fare. Check whether it is actually available from your departure station before you count on it.

Buses once you are in town

A day spent entirely in the centre does not automatically need a bus ticket. If you do ride, the 2026 brochure lists a single journey at €1 when bought at agencies, in apps, online or with a bank card at the vehicle’s reader. Conventional onboard sales cost €2. A journey is valid for one hour, including transfers. A day pass costs €3.60 and ten journeys €9. Children under four travel free, and children under eight must be accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Which station should I book for the Montbéliard Christmas market?

If you can, book to Gare de Montbéliard. It is in the town centre, while the TGV station needs the line D transfer in both directions.

Is THNS 4 the right bus to the TGV station?

The guide says no. That reference on the event website does not match the operator’s current plan, which lists line D.

Can I use the TER offer from Paris?

No. Île-de-France routes are excluded from this TER promotion, which covers selected journeys within Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

All transport details, plus the six routes, are in the Montbéliard Christmas Markets 2026 travel guide.
