Bukhansan National Park sits on Seoul's northern edge, and you can reach its trailheads by subway and bus in 45–75 minutes from the centre. The classic hike to Baegundae, the highest peak at 836 metres, takes 4–6 hours return and ends on steep granite with fixed cables; for an easier city view, Inwangsan or Bugaksan along the Seoul City Wall take 1.5–3 hours. If you are fitting a hike into a short trip, the Seoul Itineraries help you choose which day to use.

Hiking is a big part of life in Seoul. On weekends the trails fill with local hikers in full outdoor gear, and the busiest routes can have queues on the final rock sections. Go on a weekday if you can, and start early.

Main routes to Baegundae

  • From Bukhansanseong trailhead (west). The most common route for first-timers. Take Line 3 to Gupabal Station, then a bus to the Bukhansanseong stop (10–20 minutes). The trail follows a valley past old fortress gates and Daedongmun before the steep final section. About 2.5–3.5 hours up.
  • From Bukhansan Ui Station (east). The Ui-Sinseol light rail line ends close to the trailhead. The route via Baegundae Shelter is steady climbing, about 2–3 hours up. Good if you stay in the east or north of the city.
  • From Doseonsa temple. A shorter approach from the east: a bus or taxi takes you up to Doseonsa, from where the summit is about 1.5–2 hours. Steeper and busier.

The last 20–30 minutes to the summit are on bare granite. Steel cables and railings help, but you need grip and a head for heights. On icy days in winter, this section is dangerous without crampons; turn around if conditions look bad.

Easier hikes with a view

  • Inwangsan (338 m). Starts near Dongnimmun or Gyeongbokgung in the city. A paved and stepped path along the Seoul City Wall reaches the top in about 1–1.5 hours, with views over Gyeongbokgung and the Blue House area. One of the best sunset spots in the city.
  • Bugaksan. The city wall section behind the former presidential compound. Entry from Changuimun or Waryong Park. The trail fully reopened to the public in recent years. 1.5–2.5 hours.
  • Bukhansan Dulle-gil. A long-distance trail of gentle stages around the base of the mountains. Pick one stage of 2–4 hours for forest walking without a summit.

When to go

  • Autumn (October–early November). The most popular season. The leaves turn from the higher slopes down, usually peaking in mid- to late October in the park. Expect large crowds at weekends.
  • Spring (April–May). Azaleas and new green leaves. Fine dust days can reduce visibility; check the air quality forecast.
  • Summer. Hot and humid with heavy rain during the monsoon (roughly late June to July). Start at dawn and carry plenty of water.
  • Winter. Clear views but icy rock. Locals use light crampons (abaksi) and hiking poles. Some trails close temporarily for safety or fire prevention.

What to bring

  • Shoes with good grip; trainers with worn soles slip on granite.
  • 1.5–2 litres of water per person and snacks. Some trailheads have small shops; there is little on the way.
  • Layers. It is several degrees colder and windier at the top.
  • Your phone with Naver Map or KakaoMap. Trail signs are in Korean and English at junctions.
  • Cash for the bus and a meal at the end. Restaurants near trailheads serve pajeon (savoury pancake) and makgeolli, a traditional after-hike combination.

Rules and safety

Entry to the national park is free. Some trails close for nature restoration or in high fire-risk periods, usually with signs at junctions and notices on the Korea National Park Service website. Trails also have closing times for starting ascents in the afternoon; plan to start by 09:00–10:00 at the latest for Baegundae. Mountain rescue in Korea is reached via 119. Tell someone your route.

Getting back to the city

You do not have to come down the way you went up. A common loop is up from Bukhansanseong and down towards Ui or Doseonsa, which gives you more variety. Check the last bus times at the lower trailhead before you start, or plan to take a taxi to the nearest subway station (10–20 minutes). After the hike, the area around Gupabal and Bukhansan Ui stations has convenience stores, restaurants and public toilets.

Plan B

If the forecast shows rain, ice or high fine-dust levels, hike Inwangsan instead. It is short, close to the city and has an easy way down. On a wet day, the Seoul City Wall Museum near Dongdaemun covers the wall's history indoors.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Bukhansan hike to Baegundae?

Moderate to hard. The trail is mostly rocky steps, and the final section is steep granite with cables. Reasonably fit hikers manage it in 4–6 hours return.

Do I need a guide for Bukhansan?

No. Trails are well marked and busy. A guide can help in winter or if you are unsure about the final rock section.

What is the easiest mountain hike in Seoul?

Inwangsan along the city wall. It takes about 1–1.5 hours to the top, starts in the city and has a clear path.
