The "Street of Harmony" is Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (also called Pitt Street) in George Town, where a church, a Chinese temple, a Hindu temple and a mosque stand within a few hundred metres of each other. Little India is right next to it, around Lebuh Pasar, Lebuh Queen and Lebuh Chulia. You can walk both in 2–3 hours, ideally in the morning or late afternoon, and finish with a banana-leaf meal. Our Penang Itineraries include this area in a George Town day route, and you can choose English, Spanish or German as your edition.
Start at the northern end near Lebuh Farquhar and walk south. The whole stretch is less than 1 km.
The name "Street of Harmony" is a modern label for this mix. What makes it interesting is that all four are active places of worship, not museums. You see people praying, lighting incense and coming and going, side by side.
Little India is a few blocks of shophouses around Lebuh Pasar, Lebuh Queen, Lebuh King and the eastern end of Lebuh Chulia. It is a working shopping area for Penang's Indian community: textile shops with saris, gold jewellers, spice merchants, flower garland stalls and music shops.
Eat with your right hand if you want to try it the local way; cutlery is always available. Wash your hands at the sink before and after.
The heat builds fast after 11:00. If you prefer late afternoon, start around 16:30 and finish with dinner in Little India when the shop lights come on.
During Deepavali (October or November; early November in 2026), Little India fills with stalls, lights and shoppers. It is lively and crowded, and some businesses close on the day itself. Thaipusam (January or February) brings a large procession to the hilltop temple outside George Town. Chinese New Year changes the mood in the whole heritage zone. Check dates each year.
The Street of Harmony sits in the middle of George Town's UNESCO-listed heritage area, so it links easily with other sights. Walk five minutes south to Khoo Kongsi on Cannon Square, or ten minutes east to the Clan Jetties on Weld Quay. To the north-west, Armenian Street and the street art are close. A loop of Street of Harmony, Little India, Khoo Kongsi and the jetties fills a morning with only short walks between stops.
It is Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling in George Town, where St George's Church, Kuan Yin Teng, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Kapitan Keling Mosque stand within a short walk of each other.
Usually yes, outside prayer times and in modest dress. Robes may be lent at the entrance. Check the times at the gate on the day.
Around Lebuh Pasar, Lebuh Queen, Lebuh King and the eastern part of Lebuh Chulia, right next to the Street of Harmony.
The Penang Itineraries combine this area with Khoo Kongsi, the jetties and food stops, and the Penang Travel Guide explains George Town's communities and history. Choose English, Spanish or German as your edition. All titles are in the Penang travel guides collection.
Times, prices and visiting rules are planning estimates. Check current information at each site before you go.
