Direkt zum Artikel ↓The easiest outing in Hennef starts right at the station: walk through the centre to the Sieg, cross the river on the Horstmannsteg footbridge to the Allner See, and come back via the Kurpark in Geistingen. It is flat, needs no car and takes about 2.5–4 hours with breaks. It is a good first afternoon after arriving by train, and the Hennef Day Routes build fuller days from the same starting point.
Many visitors come to Hennef for Stadt Blankenberg or the hiking trails on the heights. This walk is the opposite: low, gentle and close to the town. It shows how Hennef lives with its river.
All timings are walking ranges at an easy pace. In total, expect roughly 7–11 km depending on how much of the lake you walk. Use a map app to follow the route; paths in the river meadows are clear but not always signposted for this exact loop.
The lake was created by gravel and sand extraction for motorway construction in the 1980s and is now a local favourite for walks and summer afternoons.
If you have an extra hour, link the walk to a few stations of the Waagenwanderweg, the scales trail through the town. It tells the story of the Chronos automatic scale, developed in Hennef by Carl Reuther and Eduard Reisert and officially approved for calibration in 1883. Pick three or four stations near the centre rather than trying to see them all, and read the boards properly.
It works well on an arrival day, for families with a pushchair on the dry main paths, and for anyone who wants a slow day between two hiking days on the heights. If you need step-free routes, check the access to the footbridge before you go.
If the weather turns, shorten the loop: walk from the station to the Kurpark and back (about 1–1.5 hours), then spend the rest of the time in a café in the centre. If you have a full day and dry weather, take the train one stop up the Sieg valley to Blankenberg (Sieg) instead and climb to Stadt Blankenberg.
On foot through the centre to the Sieg, then across the Horstmannsteg footbridge. Allow roughly 30–50 minutes at an easy pace. Check the route on a map before you leave the station.
The town permits it, but it is not an official bathing site, there is no lifeguard and water quality is not regularly checked. Swim at your own risk and check current notices.
Yes, the route is flat and can be shortened at any point. Keep an eye on children near the river and the lake shore, as there are no lifeguards.
Ten worked-out days, from easy river walks to full hiking days on the heights, are in Hennef Day Routes – 10 Itineraries. The Hennef Travel Guide covers the town's history and places in 100 topic pages. For an evening by the river, read Was die Sieg weiterträgt, a novel set in Hennef in which a sound recordist records voices, paths and the river Sieg. The guides and the novel are available in English, Spanish and German; browse them in Hennef Travel Guides.
Distances and walking times are planning estimates, not guaranteed conditions. Check official notices for the lake and river before you go.
