To get from Cologne Bonn Airport to Hennef by train, plan the journey to your actual bed rather than just to "Hennef". Search the journey planner from the airport to the Hennef stop that suits your accommodation, and check the result a few days before you travel and again on the day. Also know how the last stretch works if you land late. Hennef station is served by the RE 9 regional express and the S-Bahn lines S 12 and S 19.

Our arrival guide, Getting to Hennef, has a page on exactly this journey and a form for your whole arrival chain. Here are the decisions that matter most.

Pick the right Hennef stop

Hennef has more than one stop, and the names can mislead you:

  • Hennef Bahnhof is the main station and the natural anchor for a trip without a car. It serves the centre, the start of the Kulturlandweg and buses to the villages, such as line 524 to Lanzenbach.
  • Hennef im Siegbogen can be better placed for some accommodation or destinations. Check it on a current map, and don't choose it just because the name sounds close to the river.
  • Blankenberg is not the historic village of Stadt Blankenberg. From the platform you still have a climb ahead of you. If you are staying up there, plan that stage with your luggage.

Take a photo of the exact stop name you need. When you search for the return journey late in the evening, the correct spelling saves you mix-ups. Keep your accommodation address somewhere outside the booking app too.

Check the connection twice

Look up your date a few days in advance and again shortly before you set off. A direct train or a change: that depends on the timetable for your date. Pay attention to replacement buses: they can leave from a different stop, take longer and be harder with heavy bags. If you have a guided tour or another fixed start soon after landing, leave plenty of slack. A tight connection is a poor basis for a fixed appointment.

Do the same for your departure. Pick out an earlier train as well as the one you want, so weather or tiredness doesn't leave you depending on a single connection.

The last stretch after the train

The distance on a small overview map says little about how a walk feels with a wheeled suitcase. If you are staying in the centre, walk it once without luggage later, not in the rain with everything you own. If you are staying in a village, search for the bus using the exact village name and then the right stop, and check the map between the stop and the door.

Where buses are sparse, the on-demand shared taxi (Anruf-Sammeltaxi) can help. According to the town, you need to book it at least 60 minutes before the scheduled start, by phone on 02241 499 999 or through the RSVG's digital booking options. Give the start, destination, number of people and any large luggage. A booking request you saved is not a confirmed ride, so keep the confirmation to hand.

Late arrivals, step-free travel and bikes

  • Late arrival: ask your accommodation how the key handover works. A vague promise of flexible check-in doesn't tell you what happens at 11 pm.
  • Luggage: ask in advance if the property can store bags before check-in or after check-out.
  • Step-free travel: with a wheelchair, walker, pushchair or heavy luggage, check the access at each station and whether the lifts you need are working. Our guide does not describe any station as step-free across the board. Ask the transport operator if you are unsure.
  • Bikes: bike carriage is not included in the Deutschlandticket, and space on trains is limited. During replacement services, check the bike rules for the vehicle actually used.

Then keep the first afternoon simple. Plan your first activity close to where you arrive. After a flight and a transfer, a short walk in the centre or a slow hour in the Kurpark in Geistingen makes more sense than setting off straight away on a long hilly trail. Save Stadt Blankenberg or a marked walk for a full day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Cologne Bonn Airport to Hennef?

By public transport, with Hennef Bahnhof as the usual destination. It is served by the RE 9, S 12 and S 19. Search your exact date in the journey planner, because changes and replacement buses vary from day to day.

Which station should I use for Stadt Blankenberg?

The station called Blankenberg, but plan the walk up to the historic village as a separate stage with a real climb. With luggage, ask your accommodation about the best way up before you travel.

What if I land late in the evening?

Confirm the key handover with your accommodation and check the last connections in advance. For a village address, book the Anruf-Sammeltaxi well ahead rather than hoping something turns up at the station.

Can I take my bike on the Deutschlandticket?

No, bike carriage is not included and needs its own ticket. Even with a bike ticket, carriage depends on the rules and the space available, so don't rely on the last train of the day.
