San Sebastián Christmas market in the rain: indoor options and a plan B

When it rains in San Sebastián, keep the market visit short and give a museum or food market the longer part of the day. Which venue works depends on the weekday, because San Telmo and Tabakalera normally close on Mondays. Here is how to plan a wet day in December.

Short answer

What can you do in San Sebastián when it rains at Christmas?

On a rainy day, combine one indoor venue with a short visit to one Christmas market area. From Tuesday to Sunday, San Telmo museum (10:00-19:00 in winter, free on Tuesdays) and Tabakalera (building 10:00-21:00, exhibitions 11:00-13:00 and 16:00-20:00) offer a longer break. San Martín food market at Calle Urbieta 9 adds a covered stop from Monday to Saturday. Shorten the walk between the Urumea and Plaza Ramón Labayen, as there is no covered route between the market areas.

INDOORS

Where can you go indoors in San Sebastián on a rainy day?

Three places from the guide work as a longer break from the weather. Each has its own opening pattern.

MUSEUM

San Telmo

San Telmo on Plaza Zuloaga explores Basque society and culture in a former convent with a modern extension. Winter hours are 10:00-19:00, Tuesday to Sunday. Standard admission is €10 and entry is free for everyone on Tuesdays. Choose part of the permanent collection rather than trying to see every room during a short break from the rain.

CULTURE CENTRE

Tabakalera

Tabakalera in Egia is close to the railway and bus stations. The building opens 10:00-21:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, and access is free. Exhibition rooms keep shorter hours, 11:00-13:00 and 16:00-20:00, so an open building at lunchtime does not mean open exhibitions. The café and restaurant were listed as temporarily closed.

FOOD MARKET

San Martín

The food market at Calle Urbieta 9 opens Monday to Saturday, 08:00-20:00, with fishmongers generally Tuesday to Saturday. On Sundays only some businesses trade, 08:00-14:00. It is a good covered stop for looking at produce and buying something small, but it is not a place to spend a whole afternoon in the way a museum is.

BY WEEKDAY

Which rainy-day plan fits which day in San Sebastián?

The weekday decides your indoor options. Public holidays override the normal pattern.

TUESDAY

Free museum day

San Telmo opens and admission is free for everyone. Spend the late morning in the museum, take a long lunch, then visit one Christmas market area from 16:30. Tabakalera is also open from Tuesday. Special events and guided visits may have their own conditions, so check them separately.

WED TO SUN

Choose one cultural focus

Pick San Telmo or Tabakalera as the main indoor stop. At Tabakalera, remember the exhibition break from 13:00 to 16:00. On Sunday both cultural venues normally open, while San Martín has only a partial offering in the morning, so do not plan a full food-market visit that day.

MONDAY

Plan without museums

San Telmo and Tabakalera normally close on Mondays, which includes Santo Tomás day on 21 December. On an ordinary Monday, San Martín can be your covered stop, though fishmongers are generally listed for Tuesday to Saturday. Keep the market part short and plan an early meal.

AT THE MARKET

How do you visit the San Sebastián Christmas market in wet weather?

A shorter, more purposeful circuit is more comfortable than a long walk between both areas.

ONE AREA

Keep it short

Choose either Paseo del Urumea or Plaza Ramón Labayen and leave the second area for a drier day. One area with a few purposeful stops can be enough. Decide on the current forecast and actual conditions rather than a general expectation about the weather.

HANDS FREE

Carry less

A small shopping bag over your shoulder leaves your hands free for an umbrella or a handrail. Keep wet clothing away from purchases and ask for packaging that suits a damp walk back. Larger buys may need an extra trip to your accommodation.

SEVERE WEATHER

Check for changes

The market conditions allow adjustments in exceptional circumstances. In severe weather, check the organiser's latest announcement before setting off. A printed opening window does not override such changes. Check your return connection before each outdoor stage. If the forecast looks poor, a museum day with only a short market visit is a sound plan B.

PLAN

A compact rainy day in San Sebastián

Example for an ordinary Tuesday to Saturday during the market season.

  1. Morning

    San Martín food market

Start under cover at Calle Urbieta 9. Buy only what you can eat soon or store easily.

  2. 11:00

    Museum or exhibitions

San Telmo is open from 10:00; Tabakalera's exhibition rooms open at 11:00 and pause from 13:00.

  3. 14:00

    Long lunch

The market stalls take their break now. Choose a restaurant rather than hoping for a free table outdoors.

  4. 16:30

    One Christmas market area

Visit the Urumea or Plaza Ramón Labayen for a short circuit, only if conditions suit.

  5. Evening

    Back early

Skip the lights walk if wind and rain increase, or keep it to one short stretch on your way back.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What if it rains at the San Sebastián Christmas market?

Keep the market visit short and choose one area, either by the Urumea or on Plaza Ramón Labayen. Spend the longer part of the day indoors at San Telmo or Tabakalera from Tuesday to Sunday. The guide does not promise a covered route between the market areas, so include the walk between stops in your planning.

Is San Telmo open on Mondays?

San Telmo normally closes on Mondays, with exceptions for public holidays and holiday bridge days. Winter hours are 10:00-19:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. It closes on 25 December and 1 January and opens 10:00-14:00 on 24 and 31 December. Admission is €10, free for everyone on Tuesdays.

Can I visit Tabakalera at lunchtime?

The building is open 10:00-21:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, but the exhibition rooms close between 13:00 and 16:00. Plan exhibitions for a morning from 11:00 or an afternoon from 16:00. The café and restaurant were listed as temporarily closed, so eat somewhere else.

What can I do on a rainy Monday in San Sebastián?

With San Telmo and Tabakalera normally closed, San Martín food market is the main covered option from the guide on an ordinary Monday. Combine it with a long lunch and a short market visit from 16:30. On 21 December, Santo Tomás is the reason to be out, so dress for the weather.

Where can I go indoors on 25 December or 1 January?

San Telmo and Tabakalera both close on these days, and the general schedule of San Martín does not confirm holiday opening. You need a separately confirmed alternative for these dates. Some Christmas market stalls may also stay closed, so keep plans flexible.
