Erfurt Christmas market in the rain: what to do on a wet or cold day

On a wet day in Erfurt, start indoors and save the market for a drier window. The Augustinian monastery and the Small Synagogue are indoor visits with substance, while the Old Synagogue is closed during Advent 2026. Keep the market to one concentrated circuit on Domplatz instead of walking to every square.

Short answer

What can you do at the Erfurt Christmas market when it rains?

When it rains, change the order of your day. Start with an indoor attraction that is definitely open, such as the Augustinian monastery (audio-guide visits Monday to Friday 10:00 to 16:00, €8.50 for adults) or the Small Synagogue (free admission, Tuesday to Sunday, safest after 11:00). Then visit Domplatz for one focused market circuit when the rain eases. The craft courtyard is not necessarily covered, Krämerbrücke is no dry substitute and the Winterberg rink is outdoors. The Old Synagogue is closed for renovation throughout Advent 2026.

INDOORS

Which indoor places in Erfurt are open during Advent 2026?

Choose an indoor visit by its subject and its real opening hours, not only as a place to warm up.

MONASTERY

Augustinian monastery

The regular programme includes admission with a QR-code audio guide in German, English and Korean, €8.50 for adults. General hours are Monday to Friday 10:00 to 16:00, Saturday 11:00 to 14:00 and Sundays and public holidays 11:00 to 12:30. Christmas and New Year arrangements may differ, so check your exact date.

ADVENT TOUR

“Wenn Weihnachten leuchtet…”

On 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17 and 22 December, the monastery runs a public Advent tour at 16:30 with a light installation and seasonal tastings, lasting around 90 minutes. It costs €22 per person. On a rainy tour day it gives the late afternoon a fixed indoor anchor. English delivery is not confirmed.

JEWISH HERITAGE

Small Synagogue

The Small Synagogue lists free admission, Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays. The venue page gives 10:00 to 18:00, a tourism page gives 11:00 as the opening time, so plan your visit after 11:00. It does not house the Erfurt Treasure, which is unavailable while the Old Synagogue is closed.

OUTDOORS

Which parts of the Erfurt Christmas market work in bad weather?

Most of the market is outdoors. Pick one main area and keep the walk between stops short.

DOMPLATZ

One concentrated circuit

Domplatz works well for a focused market visit when the weather lifts for an hour or two. Paving and cable ramps can be slippery in the wet, so take care with pushchairs and walking aids. Plan a warm break nearby rather than adding more squares to the route.

COURTYARD

Craft courtyard at Fischmarkt 13/17

The courtyard is an option only on 3–6 and 10–13 December, from noon. A courtyard is not automatically covered, and the market announcement does not promise full protection from the weather. If crafts are your reason for coming, keep it, but dress for being outside.

PETERSBERG

Krämerbrücke and Winterberg

Krämerbrücke is a pleasant walk with shops along it, but it is not a consistently dry indoor stay. The Winterberg rink on Petersberg is outdoors, and wind and rain may shorten your visit even when the rink is open. Check the weather and operator information before you climb.

PLAN B

How do you plan a rainy day at the Erfurt Christmas market?

Be more definite about your break than about how many market areas you will see.

ORDER

Indoors first, market later

Begin with the monastery or the Small Synagogue, then move to Domplatz in a better weather window. On Fridays and Saturdays the square stays open until 22:00, which gives you more room to wait for the rain to pass. On Sundays it closes at 20:00.

SHORT WALKS

Use the tram

Trams split the day into shorter walks. Enter your actual start and destination in the current journey planner and check the remaining walking distance. Getting off at Anger is not the same as getting off near your destination, especially in the rain.

MEALS

A proper indoor meal

On a cold, wet day, a seated indoor meal can be more comfortable than several quick outdoor food stops. Place it between the indoor visit and Domplatz, or before the journey home. If you want a specific restaurant at a fixed time, reserve it yourself.

PLAN

A rainy weekday in Erfurt

An example for a Tuesday to Thursday in Advent. Adapt it to your arrival time and the weather forecast.

  1. Morning

    Augustinian monastery

Audio-guide visit from 10:00 (Monday to Friday). Allow enough time and check holiday arrangements.

  2. Late morning

    Small Synagogue

Free admission, closed on Mondays. Arriving after 11:00 avoids the conflicting opening times.

  3. Lunch

    Long indoor break

Warm up properly before going outside. Dry gloves and socks help more than another snack.

  4. Afternoon

    Domplatz circuit

One focused market visit in the drier window. Leave the smaller squares out if the rain returns.

  5. 16:30

    Optional monastery Advent tour

    Only on 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17 or 22 December. €22 per person, around 90 minutes.

  6. Evening

    Earlier return

A shorter day is a valid choice. Check the tram or train back before the market closes.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What if it rains at the Erfurt Christmas market?

Start with an indoor attraction that is definitely open, then visit Domplatz when the rain eases. Keep to one main outdoor area rather than linking every market location. The Augustinian monastery and the Small Synagogue are the indoor options described in the guide. A shorter walk and an earlier return are perfectly reasonable on a very wet day.

Is the craft market in the Fischmarkt courtyard covered?

The guide cannot confirm this. A courtyard is not automatically covered, and the organiser's announcement does not promise full protection from the weather. The courtyard market runs only on 3–6 and 10–13 December from noon, so if crafts are your priority, go anyway and dress for being outdoors.

Can I see the Old Synagogue on a rainy day in December 2026?

No. The Old Synagogue is closed for renovation from 3 August 2026 until provisionally 28 February 2027, so the Erfurt Treasure cannot be seen during Advent and regular interior tours are suspended. The Small Synagogue, with free admission from Tuesday to Sunday, is a separate place with its own subject.

Is the Winterberg ice rink open in the rain?

The rink is outdoors, so check both the weather and the operator's current information before going up Petersberg. Even if the rink is open, wind and rain can make the visit less pleasant than you planned. Regular skating starts at 15:00 on weekdays and 11:00 at weekends.

Is the Augustinian monastery open on Sundays in Advent?

The general hours for Sundays and public holidays are short: 11:00 to 12:30. That window does not suit an afternoon stop you want to move around freely. Special arrangements around Christmas and New Year may differ, so check the date you plan to visit.
