Chicago Christmas market in the rain: indoor options and a plan B

Both Christkindlmarket locations are outdoors, so wet or cold weather calls for an indoor anchor. The two craft fairs help only on their own dates; on other days the Cultural Center and two museums give you a warm, worthwhile stop.

Short answer

What can I do if it rains at the Chicago Christmas market?

Choose an indoor stop you actually want to see first, then keep the market visit short and flexible. From 3 to 6 December One of a Kind fills the seventh floor of THE MART, and from 18 to 20 December Renegade Craft runs indoors in Bridgeport. On other days the Chicago Cultural Center in the Loop is free and open 10 am–5 pm. The Chicago History Museum and the Swedish American Museum are further options, but both are closed on Mondays, so check the weekday and any holiday hours.

INDOOR OPTIONS

Where can I go indoors near the Chicago Christmas markets?

An indoor venue only helps if it is open on your day. These are the options the guide covers, with the limits that matter.

THE LOOP

Chicago Cultural Center

At 78 E Washington Street, also in the Loop. Admission is free and building hours are listed as 10 am–5 pm daily, with exhibitions closing 15 minutes earlier. Architecture tours run on Thursdays and Fridays at 1:15 pm with same-day sign-up at the Randolph Street desk. Check holiday hours separately.

LINCOLN PARK

Chicago History Museum

At 1601 N Clark Street. Open Tuesday to Saturday 9:30 am–4:30 pm and Sunday noon–5 pm, generally closed on Mondays. Adults who do not live in Chicago pay US$24; children aged 12 and under enter free. It closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and closes early, at 2:30 pm, on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

ANDERSONVILLE

Swedish American Museum

At 5211 N Clark Street. Open Tuesday to Friday 10 am–4 pm and weekends 11 am–4 pm, closed on Mondays. The children's area opens at 1 pm from Tuesday to Thursday. Adults pay US$6, children, students and seniors US$4, and a family rate is US$15. It is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December.

INDOOR FAIRS

Are the Chicago craft fairs a good rainy-day option?

Yes, but only on their event dates. Outside them, they cannot be a spontaneous plan B.

3 – 6 DEC

One of a Kind at THE MART

On the seventh floor of 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, linked to Merchandise Mart station. Open 10 am–7 pm from 3 to 5 December and 10 am–5 pm on 6 December. The show floor has cafés and bars, and the first-floor coat and package check costs US$4 per item, which helps when you arrive in wet layers.

18 – 20 DEC

Renegade Craft in Bridgeport

At Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W 35th Street. Friday 5–8 pm, Saturday and Sunday 11 am–5 pm. The fair is indoors with street-level access and a lift, but seating is limited. You still need to plan the outdoor approach and the journey back, especially after the Friday evening session.

PLAN B

Three quick checks

Is the fair or museum actually open today? Does the weekday or holiday change the hours? After travelling and getting in, will you have enough time for a proper visit? If the answer to any of these is no, switch to another option rather than rushing through a short visit.

PLAN

A rainy day in the Loop

An example for a regular opening day before 24 December. Times are flexible visiting windows, not bookings.

  1. 10:00

    Chicago Cultural Center

Start indoors with architecture and current exhibitions; the visitor booklet has an English and Spanish QR guide.

  2. 11:30

    Lunch and a short transfer

Leave time for the exit, street crossings and a warm meal before going outside again.

  3. 13:00

    Daley Plaza

A focused market visit: get your bearings, choose a drink or gift, and shorten it if the weather turns.

  4. Afternoon

Back to the hotel or a second indoor stop

Drop off purchases, warm up, and check your return route before heading out again in the evening.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What if it rains at the Chicago Christmas market?

Pick one indoor activity you genuinely want to do and keep the market part flexible. In the Loop, the Chicago Cultural Center is free and open 10 am–5 pm. In early December One of a Kind runs indoors at THE MART, and Renegade Craft does the same in Bridgeport from 18 to 20 December. A shorter day is fine if the weather or your group's energy drops.

Is the Chicago Christmas market covered or indoors?

The Christkindlmarket locations at Daley Plaza and Wrigleyville are outdoor markets, and the guide does not describe covered areas you can rely on. The indoor options are the two craft fairs, One of a Kind and Renegade Craft, on their event dates only. For other days, plan a museum or the Cultural Center as your warm stop.

Which Chicago museums are open on a Monday in December?

Both the Swedish American Museum and the Chicago History Museum are generally closed on Mondays; the History Museum announces individual exceptions. The Chicago Cultural Center lists daily building hours of 10 am–5 pm. Check holiday arrangements for every venue separately, because they do not follow the markets' special hours.

Is the Chicago Cultural Center free?

Yes, admission is free. The building is listed as open daily from 10 am to 5 pm, with exhibitions closing 15 minutes earlier. Public architecture tours of about 45 to 60 minutes run on Thursdays and Fridays at 1:15 pm, with same-day sign-up at the Randolph Street desk and limited places, so keep a self-guided visit as a fallback.

What should I wear to the Chicago Christmas markets?

Dress in layers you can adjust, since you will move between heated buildings, trains and the open air. Wear shoes that suit the distances in your plan and keep rain protection and travel documents easy to reach rather than under your purchases. It gets dark early in December, so allow for colder evenings on the way back.
