Bottrop Christmas market 2026: dates, places and opening times
The Bottrop Weihnachtszauber runs from 12 November to 20 December 2026, but not every area opens on the same days. Two separate weekend events, the Kirchhellen Wintertreff and the St Nicholas market at the Kulturhof, add their own dates. This page sets them side by side.

When is the Bottrop Christmas market in 2026?
The Bottrop Weihnachtszauber is advertised for 12 November to 20 December 2026. The town-hall square, Ernst-Wilczok-Platz, opens on 12 November from 17:00 to 22:00 and then has regular hours mainly on Fridays (17:00–22:00), Saturdays (15:00–22:00) and Sundays (15:00–20:00). Hansastraße and Mensingplatz are listed Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 21:00 and on Sundays from 15:00 to 20:00. The Kirchhellen Wintertreff takes place on 27–29 November and the Kulturhof St Nicholas market on 5–6 December.

Which areas make up the Bottrop Christmas market?
The Weihnachtszauber in the city centre is one Advent offering spread over several squares and streets. They are close together but follow different schedules, so agree on a specific meeting point.
Town-hall square (Ernst-Wilczok-Platz)
The square in front of the town hall is the place for a longer evening. The organiser lists two twelve-metre synthetic ice-stock lanes and the Traubenhütte, a larger glass-sided tent. Regular hours concentrate on Friday to Sunday, so a weekday visit should not be planned around this square unless a special date is published.
Hansastraße and Mensingplatz
These areas are listed with daily opening hours: Monday to Saturday 11:00–21:00 and Sunday 15:00–20:00. Mensingplatz is also called the Phoenix-Quartier in current organiser information. Both names refer to the same market area, so note both for navigation and signs. This is the best starting point on a weekday.
Totensonntag and the final weekend
On 22 November, Totensonntag, the German day of remembrance, the daily areas are listed for 18:00–20:00 only, so normal Sunday hours do not apply. On the final weekend, 19–20 December, the organiser gives special hours of 15:00–22:00. After 20 December, the central market visits described here are not a reliable choice.
When are the Kirchhellen Wintertreff and the Kulturhof St Nicholas market?
Two short events give certain weekends a different character. Each one deserves to be the main reason for the day rather than a quick extra.
Kirchhellen Wintertreff
Kirchhellen is part of Bottrop but lies outside the small city-centre circuit. The Wintertreff around Johann-Breuker-Platz is listed by Bottrop tourism for 27–29 November 2026. Treat it as a separate excursion and plan the journey, the programme and the return together. Daily programme details need to be checked separately.
St Nicholas market at the Kulturhof
The St Nicholas market takes place at the Kulturhof and Kulturzentrum August Everding. Two municipal sources give 5–6 December 2026. Daily hours, workshops and any registration requirements are published separately, so check the programme once it appears and set your arrival time by it.
Seeing both events
The two weekends are a week apart. Seeing both means two visits or a longer stay with days in between when neither event is running. If you have one weekend, pick the event that suits your group and add only one city-centre section on the same day.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Bottrop Christmas market open on Mondays?
The daily areas on Hansastraße and Mensingplatz are listed from Monday to Saturday, 11:00 to 21:00. The town-hall square is different: its published regular hours concentrate on Friday to Sunday. So a Monday visit works for the daily areas, but do not count on the square in front of the town hall. Check current notices before you go.
Are all Bottrop Christmas markets open at the same time?
No. The city centre has distinct areas with different hours, and the Kirchhellen Wintertreff and the Kulturhof St Nicholas market are separate weekend events on 27–29 November and 5–6 December. Always check the specific place, date and time together rather than relying on the overall season dates.
What are the opening hours on the last weekend?
For the final weekend, 19 and 20 December 2026, the organiser lists special hours of 15:00 to 22:00. The season ends on 20 December, so a trip after that date is not a reliable choice for the market visits. Illuminations or open shops do not replace an operating Christmas market.
Is there an ice-stock lane at the Bottrop Christmas market?
Yes. The organiser lists two twelve-metre synthetic ice-stock lanes on the town-hall square, Ernst-Wilczok-Platz, alongside the Traubenhütte tent. A lane or a seat is not guaranteed without booking, so check slots, group size and conditions in advance and have an alternative ready if it is booked out.
Can I visit the Bottrop Christmas market after Christmas?
The central season documented in our research ends on 20 December 2026. Do not plan a market visit for the days after Christmas based on illuminations or old photographs. If you are in the area later in December, a museum visit or a walk is a more dependable plan.
