An Advent weekend in Bilbao: arrival, where to stay and a two-day market plan
A December weekend in Bilbao works best with one market area per day. Spend Saturday on crafts at Gabonart and the old town, then Sunday on Itsasmuseum and an evening in Doña Casilda Park. The guide's example is Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 December 2026.

How do you plan an Advent weekend at the Bilbao Christmas markets?
Choose a weekend when both multiweek markets are open, for example 12-13 December 2026. Arrive by bus A3247 from Loiu airport (€5 without Barik), allowing for the diversion that starts on 2 November. On Saturday, visit Gabonart from 11:00, take the midday break in Casco Viejo and return from 17:00 or book an Azkuna Zentroa building tour. On Sunday, visit Itsasmuseum (11:00-19:00) and finish at the Doña Casilda Park market between 17:00 and 21:00.
- Example weekend
- Sat–Sun 12–13 Dec 2026
- Airport bus
- A3247, €5
- Tram
- €2 single journey
- Santo Tomás
- Mon 21 Dec, separate trip
How do you get to Bilbao for the Christmas markets?
The guide describes arrival by air with the airport bus and getting around by tram and metro. One winter change matters this season.
A3247 from Loiu
Route A3247 connects the airport in Loiu with Bilbao throughout the year. Bizkaibus quotes €5 for an occasional ticket without Barik, payable by bank card at the airport counter. Check the connection for your actual flight date, because year-round operation does not mean an unchanged holiday timetable.
New stops from 2 November
Because of the La Salve-Txorierri tunnel closure, the Alameda Recalde 11 and 14 stops are suspended from 2 November 2026 for about five months. Replacement stops in both directions are planned at Puente de Deusto/Zubiarte. The operator warns of delays, so leave slack and avoid a fixed booking straight after landing.
Tram and metro
Ribera tram stop serves the market hall and Euskalduna stop is near Itsasmuseum. Casco Viejo has a metro station of the same name. CTB lists a single tram journey at €2, or €0.44 with Creditrans on Barik under a discount table dated until 31 December 2026. Metro fares may depend on zones.
Where should you stay for the Bilbao Christmas markets?
The guide does not review hotels. It helps you choose an area according to your main interest and your arrival time.
Near Arenal for crafts and Santo Tomás
If Gabonart and Santo Tomás are your priorities, accommodation with a convenient connection to Arenal is practical. Casco Viejo, the market hall and pintxos areas are then close at hand, and the midday market break can include a return to your room.
Western area for the park and museum
If the park market and Itsasmuseum matter most, connections to the western visitor area are more important. Compare the actual address with your evening return from Doña Casilda Park, since the park's evening sessions run until 21:00 or 22:00, and a late return should feel easy.
Three questions before you book
How will I reach my main market area? Where will my luggage stay? What terms apply if my arrival changes? Breakfast, cancellation terms, luggage services and extra journeys affect costs as much as the room price. With limited mobility, ask about the specific entrance, lift and room.
How do you plan the journey home from Bilbao?
Sunday is the day most weekend plans become too tight. Decide early what to drop if your flight leaves sooner.
Save your return stop
Save the current A3247 stop for your return journey as well as your accommodation address. Arrival and departure stops may be on different sides of the street. Allow time for collecting luggage, reaching the stop and possible traffic delays caused by the diversion.
When you leave on Sunday
If you leave early on Sunday, the guide suggests omitting either the museum or the evening market. Another option is to move the park market to Saturday evening, replacing the second Gabonart session or the building tour. Keep Sunday for the museum and your journey.
Gifts and baggage
Fragile objects need sturdy packaging and room in your luggage. Ask about dimensions and weight if your baggage allowance is limited. For food, ask how to store the exact product until you get home, and check your destination's import rules.

Frequently asked questions
Is a weekend enough for the Bilbao Christmas markets?
Yes, if you give each day one market area. A Saturday at Gabonart and Casco Viejo and a Sunday with Itsasmuseum and the Doña Casilda Park market covers both multiweek markets. Santo Tomás falls on Monday, 21 December 2026, so a Sunday departure would miss it.
Which weekend is best for the Bilbao Christmas markets in 2026?
Both multiweek markets are open together from 11 December, so weekends from 12-13 December onwards include the park market and Gabonart. The guide uses 12-13 December as its example. For Santo Tomás, plan to stay until Monday, 21 December, and check its visitor hours once published.
How do I get from Bilbao airport to the city centre in December 2026?
Take bus A3247, which runs year-round. An occasional ticket without Barik costs €5 and can be paid by bank card at the airport counter. From 2 November the Alameda Recalde 11 and 14 stops are suspended, with replacements at Puente de Deusto/Zubiarte. Allow for possible delays.
Do I need a car for a Christmas market weekend in Bilbao?
The guide plans the weekend with the airport bus, tram and metro. Ribera tram stop and Casco Viejo metro station serve the old-town area, and Euskalduna tram stop is near Itsasmuseum. Check your actual connection between the two market areas, as they are not a short walk apart.
