Tanah Lot is a sea temple on a rock just off Bali's south-west coast, and most people go for sunset. Arrive at least 60–90 minutes before sunset to walk the cliff paths and see the rock at low tide, then plan your return carefully: the evening traffic back towards Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta is the part that goes wrong most often. Our Bali Itineraries help you decide which day has room for it.

Pura Tanah Lot is one of Bali's important sea temples, a chain of shrines along the coast. The temple stands on an outcrop that becomes an island at high tide. Visitors are not allowed into the temple itself, which is reserved for worship, but you can walk to the foot of the rock when the tide is low and watch the waves from the clifftops around it.

How to get there and how long it takes

Tanah Lot is in Tabanan regency, north-west of Canggu. There is no useful public transport, so you will come by car with a driver, a ride-hailing car or a scooter. As a planning range by car:

  • From Canggu: 30–60 minutes.
  • From Seminyak: 45–90 minutes.
  • From Kuta or the airport area: 60–120 minutes.
  • From Ubud: 75–120 minutes.

The return after sunset is usually slower, because everyone leaves at the same time. Ride-hailing pickups from Tanah Lot can be difficult in the evening; agree waiting time with a driver in advance or confirm with your hotel how you will get back.

What to see on site

  • The temple rock. At low tide you can walk across the sand and rocks to the base. Holy spring water is offered at a small cave below the temple, and a blessing may be given; a donation is expected. Check the tide times before you go and watch for slippery rock.
  • The clifftop paths. Walk north along the cliffs for views back to the temple. This is where most sunset photographs are taken.
  • Pura Batu Bolong. A smaller temple on a rock arch a short walk north. Access to the arch itself may be restricted; the view from the cliff is still worth it.
  • The approach. The path from the car park passes through a long row of shops and stalls. Allow time to walk through without getting stuck.

Timing, costs and what to check

  • Sunset. In Bali, sunset falls between roughly 18:00 and 18:45 through the year. Check the exact time for your date.
  • Tide. Look up the tide table. At high tide you will not reach the rock, though the waves around it are impressive.
  • Entrance fee. Foreign adults pay an entry ticket, plus parking. Expect a total of roughly IDR 75,000–150,000 per person including parking share; check the current rate at the gate.
  • Dress. Covered shoulders and knees are respectful near temples. A sarong is useful for the spring area.
  • Ceremonies. Temple festivals bring large crowds of worshippers. Access may be limited, but watching from a respectful distance is often possible. Do not climb onto shrines or walls.

A sunset afternoon plan from Canggu

  • 15:30 Leave Canggu. Give yourself a buffer for traffic.
  • 16:30 Arrive and walk to the rock if the tide allows.
  • 17:15 Pura Batu Bolong and the cliff path.
  • 17:45 Find your sunset spot. The cafés on the cliff fill quickly; a seat with a view usually means buying a drink.
  • 18:45 Leave or wait. Either go straight away or have dinner nearby and leave after 19:30 when the traffic eases.

Budget for the afternoon, including driver, entry and a drink: roughly IDR 500,000–1,000,000 for two people, depending on how you travel.

Food and comfort on site

The area around the car park and the cliffs has many warungs, cafés and snack stalls, and the prices are higher than in town. A simple meal before or after sunset is easy to find. Toilets are available near the entrance area, usually for a small fee. Bring a hat and water for the walk in the late-afternoon sun, and keep a light layer if you plan to stay into the evening, as the sea breeze can feel cool.

Plan B

If the sky is cloudy or the traffic looks bad, visit in the morning instead. The light is softer, there are fewer people and the drive is easier. You lose the sunset but gain a calmer visit. Alternatively, watch sunset closer to your base: Echo Beach and Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu, or Double Six and Petitenget beaches in Seminyak, are a short walk or ride from most hotels.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go inside Tanah Lot temple?

No. The temple on the rock is reserved for worship. Visitors can reach the base at low tide and visit the spring below it.

What is the best time to visit Tanah Lot?

Late afternoon for sunset, or early morning for fewer people. Combine your visit with low tide if you want to walk to the base of the rock.

How long should I spend at Tanah Lot?

About 1.5–2.5 hours on site, plus travel. Add time if you stay for dinner to avoid the evening traffic.
