Stay in Cairns if you want short airport transfers, the widest choice of reef boats and tours, and a walkable city without a car. Choose Port Douglas if you prefer a smaller resort town with a long beach, quicker access to the Daintree and Mossman Gorge, and reef trips to the Low Isles and the Agincourt reefs. Port Douglas is about 60–75 minutes north of Cairns by road. Where to Stay in Cairns compares the city, the northern beaches and Port Douglas in more detail.

Most visitors base themselves in the city centre near the Esplanade.
Between Cairns and Port Douglas lie the northern beaches: Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove. They are about 20–30 minutes from the airport and city.
Port Douglas is a small town on a peninsula, with Macrossan Street as its main street and Four Mile Beach along the east side.
For 5–7 nights, many visitors combine both:
For 3–4 nights, pick one base. Choose Cairns if the reef, Kuranda and short transfers are the priority. Choose Port Douglas if the rainforest and a beach town matter more.
Moving between the two is easy by shuttle bus or rental car. If you rent a car only for the Port Douglas part, pick it up in Cairns on the day you move.
A fourth option is to sleep north of the Daintree River, near Cape Tribulation or Cow Bay. You get the rainforest at night and in the early morning, before the day tours arrive. The trade-offs are clear: limited shops and restaurants, patchy mobile signal, a ferry crossing every time you leave, and a long drive to the airport (roughly 2.5–3 hours). Most visitors add one or two nights here at the end of a stay in Cairns or Port Douglas rather than using it as their only base.
If Port Douglas is fully booked or too expensive for your dates, base yourself in Palm Cove or Trinity Beach and do the Daintree as a day trip. If Cairns city hotels are full, the northern beaches work well for a first stay too.
It depends on your plans. Port Douglas is quieter and closer to the Daintree. Cairns is more practical, with more tours, lower prices and a shorter airport transfer.
About 60–75 minutes by road. Shuttle buses and private transfers run between the two.
Yes. Boats from Port Douglas go to the Low Isles and to outer reef sites such as the Agincourt reefs.
Where to Stay in Cairns compares areas by budget, transport and travel style, and the Cairns Travel Planner helps you plan nights, bookings and costs. All titles are in Cairns Travel Guides.
