Ir al artículo ↓You can physically fit the Tetraeder and Halde Haniel into one day, but we advise against it: both are climbs, each needs its own access and return, and the second heap tends to become a tired repeat of the first. For one day in Bottrop, choose one heap and build the day around it. The Tetraeder pairs well with the Gartenstadt Welheim; Haniel works best as a landscape day on its own.
Below are both one-day routes, adapted from our Bottrop day routes, plus what to do if the weather turns and the checks to make the evening before.
Why the two heaps don't belong in one day
The Tetraeder stands on the Halde Beckstraße in the east of the town. Haniel is a separate heap with a longer walk, a Way of the Cross and art at the top. Neither visit is just a view: you plan the journey there, the official access point, the climb, the descent and the connection back as one block. Do that twice and the day becomes mostly transfers.
There is also a better reason. The two heaps give different experiences. The Tetraeder is a clear architectural form against the sky. Haniel is a walk in which the route and its stations matter as much as the summit. On separate days you notice that difference.
Route 1: Tetraeder and Gartenstadt Welheim
This route pairs a wide view with the scale of everyday housing. It is a day with a transfer in the middle, not a signposted walk. Good weather that is not too hot makes the climb easier.
- Morning: the Tetraeder. Start at the official access to the Halde Beckstraße and take your time on the heap. Walking up the steel structure is optional: open steps and see-through views affect people differently, so agree beforehand that nobody gets talked into it. Anyone who stays on the heap can watch the form against the clouds and meet the others at a clearly agreed spot. Leave enough time for the descent.
- Midday: a proper break. Eat before you switch to the housing estate. Check the transfer to Welheim separately by bus, bike or car. The route does not assume a short direct walk between the two.
- Afternoon: Welheim. The garden city was built between 1913 and 1923. Walk a limited loop on public streets and look at front gardens, roofs and how the trees shape the street. It is a lived-in neighbourhood: no photos of windows, name plates or residents.
The contrast is the point: in the morning the region from above, in the afternoon the design of daily life. Add the Malakoffturm only if you have a separately confirmed guided tour and plenty of time.
Route 2: Halde Haniel as a landscape day
Haniel deserves a day whose centre is the climb and the time at the top. Allow a generous half day; depending on your pace and stops it can fill the whole day.
- Before you start: water, an extra layer and your way back are sorted. Choose an official access point, not any spot below the visible summit.
- On the way up: stop longer at a few stations of the Way of the Cross, which uses objects from mining work alongside religious motifs. Walk past quietly if people are praying.
- At the top: give the view and Agustín Ibarrola's stelae, made from painted railway sleepers, their own quiet section. Do not touch or climb the installation.
- After the descent: a simple meal or a rest. Do not tack the Kirchheller Heide on just because it is nearby; that needs its own route and energy.
If the weather turns
Swap the whole block rather than replacing stops one by one. On a day of strong wind, thunder or poor visibility, drop the heap and spend the day in the centre: the Quadrat museum centre in the morning, then the Stadtgarten and a short walk to the town hall. Check that the museum is open on your date, because a culture day without its main stop should not be improvised at the door. Keep Welheim only if being outdoors is still pleasant.
The evening before: five decisions
- Which area is the focus: the east with the Tetraeder, or Haniel.
- Is the main stop confirmed? Check the weather for the heap and any tour booking.
- What are your first and last connections? Look up the return first on a late day.
- Where do breakfast, water and lunch come from?
- Pack only for this type of day.
From October the days get shorter. Put the heap in the bright part of the day and keep culture and food for later. A summit is not something to squeeze in at dusk.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do the Tetraeder and Halde Haniel on the same day?
It is possible, but our routes do not plan both heaps on the same day for a first visit. Each needs its own access, climb and return, so you spend more time in transit than on either heap.
Do I have to climb the Tetraeder structure?
No. Walking up the heap is a complete visit on its own. The steel structure is an extra, and a personal decision to turn back needs no justification.
How long should I plan for Halde Haniel?
Plan at least half a day with a relaxed pace, time at the top and an unhurried descent. With longer stops at the stations it can easily become the main event of the whole day.
Is sunset on the Tetraeder a good idea?
Only if the way down and your connection are not squeezed. Set a clear time to leave and do not let a last photo decide it.
