Short answer: from Incheon Airport, the AREX Express is the direct rail link to Seoul Station, and the all-stop AREX service is the one to use for intermediate stations such as Hongik University for Hongdae. For Myeongdong, compare Seoul Station plus a short local connection with an airport bus that serves the area. Plan roughly 90–150 minutes door to door after you leave arrivals.

The fastest train is not always the fastest way to your room. What decides it is the last part: the metro change, the lifts and the walk from the station exit to your hotel entrance.

Before you leave arrivals

Check which terminal you land at. It is printed on your current booking, and it is the starting point for every transfer comparison. Then have three things ready offline:

  • your hotel name and address in Korean
  • the station name, line, direction and exit number nearest the hotel
  • any pickup details, with a written total price and meeting point

Tmoney is a practical stored-value card for the metro, but confirm how you can buy and recharge it before you rely on a foreign bank card. Tap as instructed on entry and exit. At our research date, the Seoul government listed an adult transport-card base subway fare of KRW 1,550 from 28 June 2025, with supplements possible for distance and special lines. Check the official fare page again before you travel.

AREX Express or the all-stop train?

The two services solve different problems.

  • AREX Express links the airport with Seoul Station. It suits hotels near Seoul Station and journeys that continue from there by metro or taxi.
  • The all-stop service calls at intermediate stations, including Hongik University. For Hongdae and Yeonnam, look at this direct route first before planning a change.

Seoul Station itself is several linked facilities rather than one platform. Airport rail, metro and intercity trains have different approaches, so allow time to walk between them with luggage. At Hongik University station, choose the exit that matches your accommodation, not the first one you see. The walk through the station can be a real part of the transfer.

Airport bus, taxi or pickup

An airport bus can be the easier option when it stops close to your hotel, which is why we suggest comparing one for Myeongdong. Look at the full journey: where the bus stops, how far you then walk, and whether that walk has stairs or hills.

A taxi makes most sense after a late landing or when the train connection no longer works. Use an official taxi or a prearranged pickup, and get the total price and meeting point in writing before you set off. Keep your hotel address in Korean ready to show the driver.

The best route by area

Work backwards from the hotel entrance, not forwards from the airport.

  • Myeongdong: compare Seoul Station plus a local connection with an airport bus serving the area. Check the walk from Myeongdong and Euljiro stations, including stairs.
  • Hongdae / Yeonnam: the all-stop train to Hongik University is the first option to check. The neighbourhood extends far beyond the station entrances, so plot the walk with luggage.
  • Seoul Station area: the simplest rail arrival, but check the precise exit, reception hours and street approach. Close in metres can still mean several crossings.
  • Jongno / Insadong: choose the station you will actually use and check the walk to the hotel's entrance, not just the neighbourhood name.
  • Gangnam and Seongsu: neither sits on the two rail options above, so plan the metro connection to the exact line serving your hotel. In Gangnam, large roads and station complexes make the last stretch longer than a map suggests.

If you have not booked yet, our Where to Stay in Seoul guide compares these areas, including how each one connects to the airport.

Late arrivals, Gimpo and the last few hundred metres

After a late flight, check the last usable departure for your whole journey, not just the first train out of the airport. A train that gets you to Seoul Station is not much help if the connection after it has stopped. If the timing no longer works, switch to an official taxi or a prearranged pickup rather than hoping.

Gimpo is a different airport and needs its own saved route. Do not reuse your Incheon plan if your ticket shows Gimpo.

For the final walk, compare a locally supported map service such as Naver Map or KakaoMap with the station signs. A straight line on a map can hide stairs, a hillside or a long interchange. When you are tired, shorten the walking route before you start improvising. For departure day, work backwards from your airline's check-in guidance and add a separate buffer for getting to Incheon.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Incheon Airport to Seoul city centre?

Plan roughly 90–150 minutes door to door after leaving arrivals, depending on your hotel and route. Immigration and baggage come on top of that, so this is a planning buffer, not a timetable.

Should I take AREX Express or the all-stop train?

Take the Express if your hotel is near Seoul Station or your route continues from there. Take the all-stop train if you are heading to an intermediate station such as Hongik University for Hongdae.

Is there an airport bus from Incheon to Myeongdong?

Airport buses serve the Myeongdong area, and for that neighbourhood we suggest comparing a bus with Seoul Station plus a local connection. Check where the bus actually stops in relation to your hotel before you decide.

What if I land after the last train?

Check the last departure for the full journey before you fly. If it no longer works, use an official taxi or a prearranged pickup with a written total price and a clear meeting point.
