Hennef works well with children if you keep the days short and pick one main outing per day: the flat walk from the station to the Allner See, the Kurpark with its pond and labyrinth, the "Muh und Mäh" family trail near Lanzenbach, or the castle village of Stadt Blankenberg for older kids. All of them can be reached without a car, with a bit of planning for the buses. Our Hennef Travel Planner has a page for group and family needs, and you can choose the German, English or Spanish edition.
Four outings that suit different ages
1. The Allner See walk (all ages, pushchair-friendly)
From Hennef station, walk through the centre to the Sieg, cross the river on the Horstmannsteg footbridge and continue to the Allner See. The paths are flat and mostly wide. With small children, plan 2–3 hours with breaks and turn around whenever they have had enough. Bring a picnic, as there is little to buy on the way.
Keep children close on the river paths: cyclists use them too, and the riverbank is not fenced. Swimming in the lake is not something to assume; follow the signs on site.
2. The Kurpark in Geistingen (toddlers and up)
A calm park with a large pond and a labyrinth laid out on the ground. Children like walking the labyrinth to the centre, and parents like the benches. It is a good afternoon stop after arriving, or a short outing on a day when energy is low. Allow 30–90 minutes.
3. "Muh und Mäh" family trail (from about six)
This marked family trail near Lanzenbach and Rosental has two loops, about 3.7 km and 5.5 km, and is aimed at children from around six years old. Expect farmland, animals in fields and some ups and downs. Without a car, bus line 524 runs from Hennef station towards Lanzenbach; check the timetable and especially the return times before you leave, as rural buses can be infrequent at weekends.
The short loop takes about 1.5–2 hours with children, the longer one 2–3 hours. Fields are private: stay on the path, close gates behind you and do not feed animals.
4. Stadt Blankenberg (from about eight, or carried)
The historic village on the ridge has castle ruins, old walls, a tower and half-timbered houses, which older children usually love. Getting there is the hard part. The station called Blankenberg is down in the valley, and the walk up is steep. With small children, use a carrier rather than a pushchair, or come by car and use the signed car parks. Check the castle's opening times before you go.
A relaxed two-day plan
- Day 1: arrive by train, check in, afternoon in the Kurpark, early dinner in the centre.
- Day 2 morning: the Allner See walk with a picnic.
- Day 2 afternoon: rest, then the playground or the library in Meys Fabrik if it is open and there is a children's event.
- Optional Day 3: Stadt Blankenberg or the Muh und Mäh trail, depending on age and weather.
Keep one free slot each day. Children cope better with Hennef's distances when the day does not depend on catching a specific bus.
Practical tips for families
- Trains: children under six usually travel free in German regional transport, and older children have reduced fares. Check the current rules of the regional transport association (VRS) for your ticket.
- Pushchairs: fine in the centre, the Kurpark and along the Sieg. Not suitable for Stadt Blankenberg's steep paths or most trails in the hills.
- Toilets: plan them around cafés and restaurants in the centre. On trails there are usually none.
- Weather: river meadows get muddy after rain. Bring spare socks and rain trousers for small children.
- Sundays: most shops are closed in Germany on Sundays. Buy snacks and supplies on Saturday.
Where to stay with children
For a first family trip, stay in the centre near Hennef station. You can walk to the Sieg, the Kurpark and restaurants, and trains and buses leave from the same place. A holiday flat in a village gives more space but means more bus planning, or a car.
Plan B on a wet day
Check the programme of the town library in Meys Fabrik and the Kur-Theater for children's events. A short walk in rain gear to the Kurpark is often enough to reset the mood. Keep Stadt Blankenberg and the family trail for a dry day.
Eating out with children
The centre around Frankfurter Straße has bakeries, cafés and family-friendly restaurants. German restaurants usually welcome children, and many have high chairs and children's dishes. Lunch is often served from around 12:00 to 14:00, dinner from about 17:30 or 18:00. Kitchens in small places may close between lunch and dinner, and in the villages restaurants often have a weekly closing day, so check before you count on a meal after a walk.
