You can visit the Erfurt Christmas market comfortably by train. From the main station, walk towards Anger or take a suitable tram, then continue through Fischmarkt to Domplatz. Plan your most important activity first, then pick connections that leave a buffer at both ends of the day. The Erfurt Christmas Markets 2026 guide includes an afternoon route that starts at the station.

Plan the day before you book the train

Decide how much time you actually want in the city. A late-morning arrival and an early return leave room for a market circuit, but not for a long visit to the craft courtyard plus the monastery tour. If you travel from further away, an overnight stay often makes more sense than a long day.

  • Half a day: the guide's first-visit route from the station via Anger and Fischmarkt to Domplatz, with an optional detour to Krämerbrücke.
  • A full day: on 3–6 or 10–13 December, add the craft courtyard at Fischmarkt 13/17 from noon.
  • A fixed appointment: the monastery Advent tour starts at 16:30. It is not a sensible plan straight after a tightly timed arrival.

From the station into the old town

The guide's first-visit route runs from the main station to Anger, on foot or by tram. Anger is one of the Christmas market locations, open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, so you get a first impression early on. From there, continue to Fischmarkt, take a detour to Krämerbrücke if you have time, and finish on Domplatz.

The guide does not give a fixed walking time, because crowds, breaks and your own pace vary. Allow roughly half a day for this route as a personal planning frame.

Using the trams

Trams can split your visit into shorter walks, which helps in cold or wet weather. Enter your actual start and destination in the current journey planner and check the remaining walking distance. Getting off at Anger and getting off near your destination are not the same thing. Construction work and temporary changes can alter familiar routes.

Choose your ticket by group size, validity area and planned journeys. The guide does not give an unverified day-ticket price, so check current fares when you plan.

Luggage and the journey back

With a suitcase, going to your accommodation first is usually more comfortable than browsing the stalls. Ask whether luggage storage is available before check-in or after check-out; it is not automatically included.

Set your return plan first: note the train, the departure time and when you need to leave your last stop. Add a buffer for busy streets and for reaching the right platform. Later closing on Domplatz on Fridays and Saturdays, until 22:00, does not mean your last suitable connection leaves equally late. Check the current service shortly before departure, including possible changes.

Visitors from abroad

If English is your travelling language, note two practical points. The monastery's audio guide is available in English, German and Korean. The public Advent tours, however, are not confirmed in English, so ask beforehand if that matters. At the stalls, prices, cup deposits and accepted payment methods may vary, so it helps to check before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the Erfurt Christmas market as a day trip by train?

Yes. The guide's afternoon route from the main station is designed for an early-afternoon arrival during the market season and takes about half a day.

How late do I need to leave Domplatz to catch my train?

That depends on your connection. Work backwards from the departure time, add the walk or tram to the station and a buffer, and leave the square accordingly.
