Bottrop is a good town for a bike day: the south has the Rhine–Herne Canal towpath, the Emscher with its new green banks, BernePark and the Tetraeder within a few kilometres of each other, while the north around Kirchhellen offers quiet farm roads and forest. A relaxed southern loop of 25–35 km takes most of a day with stops. The Bottrop Day Routes include routes for the Tetraeder with Welheim, Halde Haniel and BernePark that you can link by bike.

The Ruhr area has spent decades turning railway lines, canal paths and riverbanks into cycle routes. Bottrop sits in the middle of that network, so you can ride for hours with only short stretches on busy roads.

A southern loop: canal, Emscher and spoil heaps

Start and finish in the city centre or at Bottrop Hauptbahnhof. Distances and times are planning ranges at an easy pace.

  • Centre to Halde Beckstraße and the Tetraeder (4–6 km, 20–30 minutes). Lock the bike at the foot of the heap and walk up; the paths to the top are steep. The view shows the route ahead: canal, river, chimneys and the towns beyond.
  • Gartenstadt Welheim (2–4 km, 10–20 minutes). Ride slowly through the garden city, built for mine workers in the early 20th century. Stay on the road and respect the residents' privacy.
  • BernePark (3–5 km, 15–25 minutes). A former sewage treatment plant turned into a park, with the two round basins now planted as gardens. It shows how the Emscher region is reinventing itself. A good stop for a break.
  • Along the canal and the Emscher (8–15 km). Join the towpath of the Rhine–Herne Canal or the paths along the Emscher. Ride west as far as you like; with enough energy you can continue towards Oberhausen and the Gasometer, then turn back.
  • Back via Halde Haniel (optional, 6–10 km). A longer return north-west to Halde Haniel, with the Totems on top. Expect a steady climb if you ride part of the way up; many people push.

The full loop with Haniel is 30–45 km. Without it, 20–30 km. Plan 4–7 hours with stops.

A northern alternative: Kirchhellen and the Heide

If you prefer fields and forest to industrial heritage, head north. Kirchhellen and Feldhausen are rural, with farm shops, quiet lanes and the Kirchheller Heide forest. Ride from the centre or take a bus partway. Some forest paths are sandy or rough, so a trekking bike is more comfortable than a road bike. A loop of 25–40 km fits a day, with a lunch stop in Kirchhellen.

Bikes, signs and maps

  • Signage. NRW uses a network of red-and-white cycle signs with junction points. Combine them with a cycling map app; the canal and Emscher paths are clearly signed but the links between them less so.
  • Bike rental. The Ruhr area has a regional bike-share scheme (metropolradruhr) with stations in many towns. Check whether there are stations near your start and return point in Bottrop before relying on it. Otherwise, look for a local bike shop that rents.
  • Bikes on trains. Regional trains in NRW usually allow bikes outside peak times with a separate bike ticket. Check the current rules for your ticket.
  • Surfaces. Towpaths are mostly gravel or asphalt and flat. Heap paths are steep and loose.

What it costs and what to check

  • Bike hire: roughly €10–30 per day depending on the bike and provider.
  • Food and drinks: €15–35 per person.
  • Entry to heaps, the Tetraeder and BernePark: free. Check any opening times and closures for the Tetraeder and BernePark before you go.
  • Path closures: canal and river works can divert routes. Look for local notices.
  • Weather: wind on the open canal stretches can be strong. In autumn and winter, finish before dark; most paths are unlit.

Combining the ride with the novel's places

If you have read the Bottrop novel, a ride through the centre and the older streets of the south is a way to see the everyday town behind the story: shops, bakeries, back streets and the heaps on the skyline.

Plan B

If rain sets in, cut the ride short and lock up near the centre. The Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in the Stadtgarten is a good indoor stop and needs no detour. On a hot day, ride the canal in the morning and spend the afternoon in the shade of the Stadtgarten.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bottrop good for cycling?

Yes. The south links into the canal and Emscher paths of the Ruhr area, and the north has quiet rural roads. Most routes are flat apart from the spoil heaps.

Can I cycle from Bottrop to the Gasometer Oberhausen?

Yes, along the canal or the Emscher paths. Plan for roughly 1–1.5 hours each way at an easy pace, and check the route on a cycling map before you set off.

Do I need a special bike?

No. A city or trekking bike is fine for the canal and Emscher paths. For the forest paths in the north, wider tyres help.

Plan and read before you ride

Ten ready-made days, including the Tetraeder with Welheim, Halde Haniel, BernePark and Kirchhellen, each with a bad-weather swap, are in Bottrop Day Routes – 10 Itineraries. The Bottrop Travel Guide explains the areas and the history behind them. For the evening, read Der Himmel zwischen den Streben, a novel set in Bottrop about Mara, who comes home after fourteen years to sort out her father's copy shop. All are available in English, Spanish and German; see Bottrop Travel Guides.

Distances, times and prices are planning estimates, not guaranteed conditions. Check path closures, bike rules and opening times before you go.
