Yes, you can do Cairns without a car. Cairns Airport is only about 7 km from the city centre, roughly 10–20 minutes by taxi, rideshare or shuttle, and the central Esplanade area is walkable. Reef boats leave from the city's waterfront, and most day tours to Kuranda, the Daintree and the Tablelands include hotel pickup. A car only becomes really useful if you want to explore the Tablelands or the far north at your own pace. The Cairns airport to hotel guide covers the arrival step by step.

Our Cairns guides are available in English, Spanish and German; choose your edition on the product page.

From Cairns Airport to your hotel

Cairns Airport (CNS) has a domestic and an international terminal next to each other, a short walk apart. The road into the city is short and usually quick outside peak times.

  • Taxi. From the rank outside arrivals. Allow about 10–20 minutes to the city centre. Fares to the centre are often around AUD 25–40, more at night and on public holidays.
  • Rideshare. Apps operate in Cairns, with a signed pickup area at the airport. Prices vary with demand.
  • Shared shuttle. Shuttle services run to city hotels and, on longer routes, to the northern beaches and Port Douglas. Booking ahead is wise for late flights.
  • Hotel transfer. Some hotels arrange pickups. Ask when you book.

Port Douglas is about 60–75 minutes by road, Palm Cove about 20–30 minutes. If you are staying there, a pre-booked shuttle is usually easier than a taxi.

Getting around the city on foot

Central Cairns is flat and compact. From most hotels near the Esplanade you can walk to:

  • the Esplanade boardwalk and the free Esplanade Lagoon,
  • the Reef Fleet Terminal and the marina, where reef and island boats leave,
  • the night markets, restaurants and supermarkets in the centre,
  • Cairns Central shopping centre and the train station for the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

Walking is pleasant in the morning and evening. In the middle of the day, especially from November to April, heat and humidity make even a 20-minute walk tiring. Carry water and use shade.

Buses to the suburbs and northern beaches

Sunbus runs the city's public buses as part of the Queensland Translink network. Routes connect the city centre with suburbs, the Cairns Botanic Gardens area, Smithfield (for the Skyrail base station) and the northern beaches such as Trinity Beach and Palm Cove.

  • Buses leave from the City Place area in the centre.
  • Services are less frequent in the evening and on Sundays. Check the last bus before you head out to a beach.
  • Look up current fares and ticket options on the Translink website before you travel.

For the airport, there is no regular city bus that most visitors use. Plan a taxi, rideshare or shuttle.

Day trips without a car

  • Great Barrier Reef and islands. Walk to the Reef Fleet Terminal, or book a trip with hotel pickup.
  • Kuranda. The Scenic Railway leaves from Cairns station; Skyrail packages usually include transfers from Smithfield.
  • Daintree and Cape Tribulation. Full-day tours with pickup are the easiest way without a car. Expect a long day, often 10–12 hours.
  • Atherton Tablelands. Waterfall tours run from Cairns. Without a car or tour, the Tablelands are hard to reach.
  • Port Douglas. Shuttle buses connect Cairns and Port Douglas several times a day.

Taxis and rideshare for short trips

For trips the buses do not cover well, such as an evening meal on the northern beaches or an early start to Smithfield, taxis and rideshare are the practical choice. From the city, Palm Cove is roughly 25–30 minutes by car. Book a taxi ahead for early-morning pickups, especially on weekends, and check the fare estimate in the app before you confirm a rideshare. Waiting times can be longer late at night and on the northern beaches.

When renting a car is worth it

A car pays off if you want two or three days for the Tablelands, Mossman Gorge, the Daintree and a stay in Port Douglas, or if you are travelling as a family. Rental cars are available at the airport and in town. Before you book, check:

  • whether your rental agreement allows the Daintree area and unsealed roads north of Cape Tribulation (many standard cars are not allowed on 4WD tracks),
  • road conditions in the wet season, when floods can close roads for hours or days,
  • parking at your hotel in the city centre.

A practical mix: no car for the Cairns days, then a car for two or three days of driving north or up to the Tablelands.
