Five days in Cairns is enough for one full reef day, one rainforest day, one day in Kuranda or the Atherton Tablelands, and two easier days in and around the city. Put the reef early in your stay so you can move it if the weather turns, and keep a slow day after each long trip. Our Cairns itineraries include ready-made 3, 5 and 7-day plans with day routes, times and budgets.

The idea behind the plan

Cairns works as a base for big day trips, and big day trips are tiring. Boat check-in can be before 8:00, and a Daintree or Tablelands day can mean several hours of driving. Alternating long and short days keeps the week enjoyable and gives you room for weather changes. Two rules:

  • Do not put the reef day on your last day. Operators cancel or change trips in strong wind, and you want a spare day to rebook. If you dive, you also need time before flying.
  • Book the reef and anything with limited seats (tours with Traditional Owners, scenic train) before you arrive. Leave the rest open.

Day 1: arrive and settle in on the Esplanade

From the airport it is 15–25 minutes to the city centre by taxi or shuttle. Spend the afternoon on the Esplanade: walk the boardwalk, swim in the Esplanade Lagoon, eat near the marina. Check where your reef boat leaves from tomorrow or the day after, and walk there once so you know the way.

Budget: roughly AUD 60–150 per person, plus the airport transfer.

Day 2: the Great Barrier Reef

Take a full-day reef trip from the Reef Fleet Terminal. Choose between an outer reef pontoon, a small boat visiting several sites or an island day on Green Island or Fitzroy Island. Expect to be back in the late afternoon. Dinner close to the hotel; you will be tired.

Budget: roughly AUD 280–450 per person for the day including food, depending on the trip. Our article on reef day trips from Cairns compares the options.

Day 3: a city day in Edge Hill and the centre

Morning in the Cairns Botanic Gardens and, if something is on, the Tanks Arts Centre. Afternoon in the Cairns Art Gallery or the Cairns Aquarium, then the Lagoon again. This is your buffer day: if the reef trip was cancelled on Day 2, move it here.

Budget: roughly AUD 60–140 per person.

Day 4: Kuranda or the Atherton Tablelands

Kuranda: the village in the rainforest above Cairns. The classic plan is the Kuranda Scenic Railway one way and the Skyrail cableway the other. In 2026 Skyrail announced construction works with a changed operation until 1 November; check the current status for your date. The simplest model is the train both ways with a confirmed return time, or a coach. Add the Barron Falls lookout.

Atherton Tablelands: with a car, drive up to the crater lakes and the waterfall circuit. Lake Eacham for a swim or a walk, Millaa Millaa Falls, and a long lunch in one of the towns. Allow a full day.

Budget: roughly AUD 140–290 per person, depending on train tickets or car hire.

Day 5: the northern beaches or Mossman Gorge

For a slow last full day, take the bus or a taxi to Trinity Beach or Palm Cove, walk the beach and have lunch. Swim only in a stinger net enclosure when it is open, and follow the signs.

If you have more energy and a car, drive north to Mossman Gorge and do a guided walk with the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, then stop in Port Douglas on the way back. That is a long day, roughly 1–1.5 hours each way from Cairns.

Budget: roughly AUD 90–190 (beaches) or AUD 180–340 (Mossman and Port Douglas) per person.

Turning it into seven days

  • Add the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, ideally with one night up there instead of a very long day trip.
  • Add a second reef day, for example an island if your first trip was the outer reef.
  • Add a market morning at Rusty's Markets and a free afternoon.

Cutting it to three days

Keep Day 1 (arrival), Day 2 (reef) and either Kuranda or the beaches. Skip the Tablelands, which need a car and a full day.

Do you need a car?

Not for Days 1–3 or for Kuranda by train. For the Tablelands and Mossman Gorge a car gives you flexibility; otherwise book a tour with hotel pickup. Rent for one or two days instead of the whole week, and check that you are comfortable driving on the left.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Cairns?

Four to five days covers the reef, one rainforest area and some time in the city. Seven days lets you add the Daintree with an overnight stay.

Should I stay in Cairns or Port Douglas for five days?

For this plan, Cairns is easier because the reef boats, the train to Kuranda and the airport are all close. Port Douglas suits a quieter stay focused on the north.

What is the best day to do the reef?

Early in your stay, on the calmest forecast day, with at least one spare day after it in case the trip is cancelled.

Plan your five days

The Cairns itineraries lay out the day routes in detail, and the Cairns travel planner helps you track bookings and your budget in AUD. Each comes in English, Spanish or German; choose your edition when you buy.
