The Atherton Tablelands make a good self-drive day from Cairns: up the range to Yungaburra for the Curtain Fig Tree and the crater lakes, then south to the Millaa Millaa waterfall circuit with Millaa Millaa, Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls. Expect about 1.5–2 hours to reach the waterfalls and 4–5 hours of driving in total. Our Cairns itineraries include a Tablelands route with stop order and timing.

Our Cairns guides are available in English, Spanish and German; choose your edition on the product page.

Where the Tablelands are and how to get up

The Atherton Tablelands are a plateau of farmland, rainforest and volcanic lakes south-west of Cairns, several hundred metres higher than the coast and noticeably cooler. Main towns include Atherton, Yungaburra, Malanda and Millaa Millaa.

Three roads climb from the coast:

  • Gillies Range Road from Gordonvale, south of Cairns, to Yungaburra. Short but very winding, with many hairpin bends. Not ideal if you get carsick.
  • Kennedy Highway via Kuranda and Mareeba. Longer, but easier driving.
  • Palmerston Highway from Innisfail on the coast to Millaa Millaa. Useful as a loop if you want to come back via the Bruce Highway and stop at Josephine Falls or Babinda Boulders.

A common loop: up the Gillies Range Road in the morning, around the Tablelands, and down via the Palmerston Highway or the Kennedy Highway in the afternoon.

Stops in a sensible order

  • Lake Barrine. A crater lake in rainforest, near the top of the Gillies Range. A walking track circles the lake (about 5 km, 1.5–2 hours), or just look from the shore.
  • Lake Eacham. Another crater lake a few minutes away, with clear water and a 3–4 km circuit track. Swimming is popular here; check signs and conditions on the day.
  • Yungaburra. A small heritage village. Peterson Creek runs through it, with a walking track where platypus are sometimes seen early or late in the day.
  • Curtain Fig Tree. A giant strangler fig with aerial roots hanging like a curtain, a short boardwalk off the road near Yungaburra.
  • Malanda. Dairy country, with Malanda Falls next to the town.
  • Millaa Millaa waterfall circuit. A loop road of about 15–20 km from Millaa Millaa with three main falls: Millaa Millaa Falls (the classic view, a plunge pool), Zillie Falls (a lookout from the top) and Ellinjaa Falls (a short, steep track to the base).

If you have time on the way down via the Palmerston Highway, Josephine Falls at the foot of Mount Bartle Frere is another stop, just off the Bruce Highway south of Babinda. Check park alerts before you go, as tracks can close after heavy rain.

Timing and budget

  • Leave Cairns: by about 08:00.
  • Morning: Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham, then Yungaburra and the Curtain Fig Tree.
  • Lunch: Yungaburra or Malanda.
  • Afternoon: the waterfall circuit, then drive back, ideally before dark.

Budget: fuel for roughly 250–350 km of driving, food and any paid attractions. Most of the lakes, falls and the Curtain Fig Tree are free. Treat costs as planning estimates.

Without a car, small-group day tours from Cairns visit many of these stops.

Food on the Tablelands

The Tablelands are farming country, and food is part of the day. You pass dairies, fruit farms, coffee and tea plantations and small producers selling cheese, ice cream, avocados and tropical fruit at the roadside or at farm shops. Yungaburra and Malanda have cafés and pubs for lunch. Opening days for farm shops and cafés vary, especially outside the dry season, so check before you plan a lunch stop around a specific place.

If you plan to stay the night, Yungaburra is a good base with guesthouses and B&Bs, and it puts you close to Peterson Creek for an early-morning platypus walk.

Swimming and safety

  • Waterfalls: swimming spots can have strong currents, slippery rocks and cold water, especially after rain. Never jump from rocks, and follow the signs at each site.
  • Crocodiles: the upland lakes and falls are generally outside crocodile habitat, but always check local signs. Lowland creeks and rivers near the coast are a different matter.
  • Roads: the range roads are narrow and winding. Leave enough time and do not drive tired.
  • Weather: the Tablelands can be cool, misty or wet when the coast is sunny. Take a light jacket.

Plan B in the wet season

From about December to April, the waterfalls are at their fullest, but heavy rain can close roads, flood creek crossings and make swimming unsafe. Check road conditions in the morning. If the range roads are affected, stay on the coast and visit the Cairns Botanic Gardens, Crystal Cascades or the Esplanade instead, and move the Tablelands to another day.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Cairns to the Millaa Millaa waterfalls?

About 1.5–2 hours by car, depending on the route and stops.

Can you swim at Millaa Millaa Falls?

Many people do, in the plunge pool. Water is cool, and conditions change after rain. Follow the signs and do not swim if the flow is strong.

Can you do the Atherton Tablelands without a car?

Public transport is limited, so a guided day tour from Cairns is the practical choice without a car.
