You can visit the Arras Christmas market by train. Gare d'Arras is on Place du Maréchal Foch, and the free Ma Citadine shuttle connects the station with the centre from Monday to Saturday between 7 am and 8 pm. It does not run on Sundays or late in the evening, so plan your way back before the market evening begins. Our Arras Advent weekend page shows a full plan without a car.

Plan the whole travel day, return first

Look up trains to Arras and check both directions for your actual date. A convenient outward journey can hide an awkward return. For a day trip, the guide suggests choosing your latest sensible train home first, then deciding when to arrive. It does not list fixed December departures, because they need checking for your particular journey.

If you change trains, think beyond the scheduled connection time. Luggage, finding your way and individual mobility needs may call for a larger margin. On an international trip, check which booking covers each part of the journey, and save tickets, train numbers and directions so you can find them without a reliable internet connection.

Arriving at Gare d'Arras

The official SNCF station page places Arras station on Place du Maréchal Foch and provides information about facilities and assistance. Save the square name for your return. If your group arrives on different trains, agree on something more specific than "the station", such as an entrance you can all recognise.

If you rely on particular access arrangements, check the current position shortly before travelling. A general description of the station is not a guarantee for every platform on every date.

Ma Citadine: free, but with limits

The operator Artis describes Ma Citadine as a free service with three routes that connect at the station. No ticket or subscription is required. The key facts from the guide:

  • Days: Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays
  • Hours: about 7 am to 8 pm
  • Frequency: roughly every twelve minutes
  • Vehicles: low-floor with ramps; board at the designated stops
  • Sundays: no regular service

The market stays open until 9 pm or 10.30 pm, later than the shuttle. Taking it on the way in does not guarantee the same option on the way back. Extra seasonal services would only become a reliable option after a clear, current announcement.

Walking between the squares

Once in the centre, the main places are close together. Place des Héros, with the town hall, belfry and Boves entrance, is linked to Grand Place by Rue de la Taillerie. Route 1 in our guide follows exactly this sequence: arrive at the station, look at the town hall and façades on Place des Héros, walk Rue de la Taillerie to Grand Place, then spend time at the market before heading back in good time. Use a current city map for the streets between the station and the squares.

A short checklist for the way back

  1. Save your return train and the station name offline.
  2. Decide in the afternoon how you will get back after 8 pm.
  3. On Sundays, plan without the Citadine shuttle from the start.
  4. Agree on a meeting point and time if your group splits up.
  5. Leave time for a last purchase, collecting luggage and finding your platform.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ma Citadine really free?

Yes. The operator says no ticket or subscription is required for the three Citadine routes.

Does the shuttle run until the market closes?

No. Regular services end at about 8 pm, while the market is open until 9 pm or 10.30 pm.

Can I do Arras as a day trip?

That depends on your actual connections. Check both directions for your date and compare the usable time in Arras before booking.
