With children, the Annaberg-Buchholz Christmas market works best when you choose one main activity: the Wichtelstadt displays, a craft session in the Wichtelwerkstatt or a suitable cultural visit. The Wichteldienste children's programme opens on 28 November at 13:30, and 13 December is announced as Wichteladvent with a family theme. The family route in our Annaberg-Buchholz Christmas Markets 2026 guide (PDF) follows exactly this approach.

Wichtelstadt: small scenes to discover together

The Wichtelstadt opposite the town hall shows craft scenes in small showcases. The guide suggests turning them into a simple search game: which tools can you recognise, what is being made, and which task would you like to try yourself? There is no need to study every scene. Three details found together can be enough for a short visit, and this activity needs no booking.

The large Christmas pyramid is another good starting point. Look at it when no performance is taking place and ask the children which activities they can recognise from tools, clothing and posture. It is an easy introduction to the mining-town theme. Keep entrances to the stage and stalls clear when you stop to look.

Hands-on activities and their requirements

The market's children's programme includes several hands-on options. Their conditions differ, so check them separately rather than assuming one rule applies to all.

  • Wichtelwerkstatt: crafts with a contribution towards materials. Groups should register beforehand.
  • Woodturning school: the organiser specifies approximately seven years of age and a minimum height of 1.20 metres. Professional instruction is provided.
  • 'Im Gößner' silver mine: a guided underground tour with a minimum age of six and sturdy, closed footwear.

The Wichtel activities are market attractions, not a general childcare service. Adults remain responsible for the day's arrangements, even while a child is taking part in a workshop.

Breaks, warmth and a clear finishing point

The Wichtelstollen is described as a place with seating and shelter from wind and weather. A seat cannot be guaranteed, so look at the space when you arrive and agree on an alternative. Check toilets, a seated break and your return route early in the visit, as this gets harder in a crowd.

Explain beforehand what is firmly planned and what depends on available places. That way, a full session or a long wait does not turn into a broken promise. Agree on a manageable finishing point too. A successful activity does not need to be followed by a second museum.

A family afternoon, step by step

  1. Arrive: explore a few Wichtelstadt scenes. Each child chooses one detail and describes what they think is being made.
  2. Join in: ask at the Wichtelwerkstatt about a suitable craft, the materials charge and availability.
  3. Take a break: try the Wichtelstollen, with your alternative ready if it is full.
  4. Short finish: one stall chosen together or a last look at the lights. Leave before cold hands make the journey back harder.

Let the children's ages and stamina set the length of the visit. On 28 November and on 13 December you can expect a family focus in the programme, while on parade day the crowds may make a calm afternoon harder.

Frequently asked questions

Are the children's activities at the Annaberg market free?

Not all of them. A contribution is listed for craft materials in the Wichtelwerkstatt, and other activities have their own conditions. Looking at the Wichtelstadt displays does not require a booking.

How old do children need to be for the mine tour?

Visitors to the 'Im Gößner' mine must be at least six years old and wear sturdy, closed footwear. The museum requests advance registration during Advent.

Is the woodturning workshop suitable for young children?

The organiser gives approximately seven years of age and a minimum height of 1.20 metres as requirements. Younger children may enjoy the Wichtelstadt or a simpler craft instead.
