MARKET AREAS

Where are the Christmas markets in Montbéliard?

The market is spread across several spots in the centre. This edition has no fixed stall numbers, so a clear meeting point helps.

MAIN MARKET

Temple Saint-Martin

The main market fills the historic centre around the Temple Saint-Martin, with objects made from wood, ceramics and glass among the stalls. Take a first look at the square and connecting streets before choosing two or three stalls that fit your interest. Going inside the church is a separate activity, and no daily Advent opening hours for the interior could be confirmed.

GUEST COUNTRY

Swiss village at the town hall

Outside the town hall, the Swiss guest village is announced for the same dates as the market. Fondue with Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois is served in four heated former cable-car cabins, with up to six guests and one hour per sitting. Booking is online. Price and cancellation terms could not be confirmed at the research date.

SOLIDARITY

Parvis des Droits de l’Homme

Here the organiser announces a solidarity market with around thirty local associations. It is a good place for a conversation about regional projects rather than a quick purchase. Which groups are present depends on the day, so check the current programme or the signs on site. Ask at the stall how a purchase supports the project.

FOOD & EXTRAS

Where to eat at the Montbéliard Christmas market?

Food areas and extra activities follow their own hours. Knowing them in advance saves a lot of waiting.

HOT FOOD

Allée gourmande, Square Sponeck

This is the place to look for regional hot food. It closes one hour after the main market, except on 24 December when it also closes at 18:00. That later closing is guidance for this area only, not for every stall or restaurant in town. Saucisse de Montbéliard, a smoked pork sausage with IGP status since 2013, is one regional theme.

APERITIF

Cour Beurnier

The organiser describes a dedicated aperitif area in the Cour Beurnier. It suits a break between browsing and the evening lights. Check on site which dishes are on offer and whether there is room for your group. The courtyard and an indoor visit to the Beurnier-Rossel museum next door are two separate things.

TASTING PASS

Pass Noël Gourmand

The pass costs €9 and includes three sweet or savoury tastings and a hot drink, from 21 November to 24 December 2026. It is sold at the tourist office on rue Mouhot, at a chalet in the market area and in the online shop. Ask to see the participating stalls and conditions before you buy.

LIGHTS & ICE RINK

When do the Montbéliard Christmas lights and ice rink run?

The lights and the rink keep a different calendar from the market. Both continue after 24 December.

LIGHTS

Illuminations until 3 January

The regular lighting hours are 16:30 to 23:00, through 3 January 2027. The first switch-on on 21 November is announced for 17:15. The castle esplanade joins the programme from 28 November, so choose a later date if that part matters to you. The stalls do not stay open until 23:00, so shop before the market closes.

ICE RINK

Place Denfert-Rochereau

The rink is announced until 2 January 2027. Its start date is inconsistent on the organiser’s page, either 21 or 22 November, so confirm before planning skating on opening weekend. Admission is €6 per session, from age four, and gloves are compulsory. The rink can close in poor weather, and Saturdays are missing from the post-Christmas timetable.

MUSEUMS

Castle and Beurnier-Rossel

The castle’s historical route opens Wednesday to Friday 11:00–18:00 and at weekends 10:00–18:00, last admission 16:30. During the market season Beurnier-Rossel opens from 14:00, Wednesday to Sunday. Both are normally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the castle also on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is the Montbéliard Christmas market open on Mondays?

Yes. Until 19 December the market opens at 14:00 on Mondays and closes at 20:00. Monday 21 December follows the late-season schedule and opens at 10:00. Keep in mind that the castle and Beurnier-Rossel museum are normally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so a Monday visit works best as a market and lights trip.

What time does the Montbéliard Christmas market close on 24 December?

On 24 December the market closes at 18:00. The Allée gourmande, which usually closes an hour after the main market, also closes at 18:00 that day. The castle is closed on 24 December. If you want a relaxed final visit, plan to arrive in the morning or early afternoon.

Are the Christmas lights still on after the market ends?

Yes. The illuminations are announced through 3 January 2027, from 16:30 to 23:00. After 24 December there are no Christmas stalls, so a visit between the holidays is a city, culture and lights trip. Check museum closures on 25, 28, 29 and 31 December and 1 January.

Who is the guest country at the Montbéliard Christmas market 2026?

Switzerland is guest of honour for the fortieth edition of Les Lumières de Noël. Its village outside the town hall is announced for the same dates as the market, with fondue served in four heated former cable-car cabins. The cabins are small dining rooms, not a ride, and need an online booking.

Does the ice rink open on the first weekend?

That is not certain. The organiser’s page gives 22 November in its introduction and 21 November in the timetable. If skating is important for opening weekend, confirm it first. Admission is €6 per session from age four, gloves are compulsory and the rink can close in poor weather.
