Metz Christmas market in the rain: indoor options and a plan B
On a wet day in Metz, let one indoor visit carry the day and keep the market part short. Choose between contemporary art at the Centre Pompidou-Metz and the historical collections at the Cour d'Or, add a seated meal, then visit one square. Check Tuesday closures first.

What can you do in Metz when it rains during the Christmas market?
Make a museum the main focus of the day. The Centre Pompidou-Metz near Metz-Ville station opens 10:00 to 18:00 in winter 2026/27, with the last entry thirty minutes before closing. The Musée de La Cour d'Or is free and opens 10:00 to 12:45 and 14:00 to 18:00. Both close on Tuesdays. Saint-Étienne Cathedral normally opens 08:00 to 18:00 from November to March. Add a meal in a venue with seating and one market square. Céleste at the Temple Neuf is indoors but unheated, so it is shelter, not a warm-up stop.

Where can you go indoors in Metz on a rainy Advent day?
The guide names three indoor anchors for a wet day. Pick one theme and check its opening rules before you leave.
Centre Pompidou-Metz
The centre stands on Parvis des Droits de l'Homme near Metz-Ville station, so it works as your first stop after arrival or your last before the train. Winter hours are 10:00 to 18:00 on normal opening days, with last entry thirty minutes before closing. Visitors under 26 enter free. Choose an exhibition from the current programme and allow plenty of time.
Musée de La Cour d'Or
Admission is free. Hours are 10:00 to 12:45 and 14:00 to 18:00, so the midday break shapes your day. Focus on the thirteenth-century painted oak ceilings from a house on Rue Poncelet, shown in rooms 30 and 31. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December. Pushchairs are not allowed.
Saint-Étienne Cathedral
From November to March the cathedral normally opens 08:00 to 18:00. Look at two contrasting windows instead of trying to see everything. The guide suggests Bissière's work, with cooler blue tones on the north side and warmer orange tones to the south. Grey winter light changes the effect, which is part of the visit. Respect services and local instructions.
How do you plan the Metz Christmas market in bad weather?
A wet day needs fewer stops, not a different city. Keep the activity that matters most and cut extra walking first.
Céleste is not a warm break
Céleste at the Temple Neuf is a forty-minute light-and-sound programme, advertised from €10, from 18 November 2026 to 7 February 2027. The provider states that the building is unheated and the show includes stroboscopic light sequences. It keeps you out of the rain, but plan a separate warm stop if you need one.
Shorten the market circuit
You do not need all five squares in poor weather. Place d'Armes pairs well with the cathedral, and République with the regional chalet. Opening times do not predict crowds, so keep your stop flexible. With uncertain weather, skip the Ferris wheel or panoramic tower: a normal circuit of the square is a complete activity on its own.
Check the closing day
Both main museums in the guide close on Tuesdays, so switching from one to the other does not solve the problem. On a rainy Tuesday, combine the cathedral, a long seated meal and one market square. Tuesday 29 December 2026 follows the same rule, even though the market is still open.
