If it rains during your Zaragoza Christmas market visit, keep the outdoor part short and pair it with an indoor visit near Plaza del Pilar. The Museo del Foro, La Seo and the Basílica del Pilar are close to the square, each with its own hours. The craft fair on 4-8 December is inside the Cámara de Comercio, but closes from 14:00 to 17:00. Our page Zaragoza at Christmas in the rain has a full bad-weather day plan.

Check the forecast twice

A forecast for your actual travel dates is more useful than a general idea of winter in Aragon. Check it shortly before you leave and again on the morning of your visit. Then arrange three things close together: a short outdoor route, a warm place for a break and one indoor destination that is definitely open that day. That way you do not have to cross the city every time the weather changes.

Indoor visits near Plaza del Pilar

  • Museo del Foro: Roman city life, indoors. Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-14:00 and 17:00-21:00, Sunday and public holidays 10:00-14:30, closed on Mondays. Admission is €4 general and €3 reduced, and ends half an hour before closing.
  • La Seo: Monday to Saturday 10:00-14:30 and 16:00-20:00, Sunday 10:00-12:00 and 16:00-20:00. Last admission is 45 minutes before each closing time.
  • Basílica del Pilar: the Santa Capilla is listed as open daily from 08:00 to 20:30. The church interior and the tower are separate visits.

A church visit must fit visitor access and services, so allow some flexibility. The Museo Pilarista is a case for direct confirmation: one operator page lists opening hours, another says it is closed until further notice.

The craft fair on a wet day

From 4 to 8 December, the XLIII Feria de Artesanía Aragonesa at Paseo Isabel la Católica 2 is an indoor option with a clear purpose: handmade gifts and conversations with makers. It opens from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00. Between 14:00 and 17:00 it is not a continuous fallback, so plan a place to eat during that gap. If you intend to come back for the second session, check whether your entry conditions allow repeat admission.

Covered food and a longer indoor visit

Mercado Central on Avenida de César Augusto is a year-round food hall, open Monday to Friday 09:00-14:00 and 17:30-20:00, and Saturday 09:00-14:30. Individual stalls may keep different hours, so an open hall does not guarantee that every outlet is serving.

The Aljafería on Calle de los Diputados is a good choice for a longer indoor visit, but it is a separate journey, not a quick escape next to the market. Winter hours are normally Monday to Saturday 10:00-18:00 and Sunday 10:00-14:00. Ticket sales end 45 minutes before closing, and general admission is €7.

What to pack

  • A waterproof jacket and warm layers you can remove indoors.
  • Shoes with good grip for wet paving.
  • A small umbrella that does not block narrow passages between stalls.
  • A bag that keeps fragile purchases dry.
  • Your saved tram or bus route back, so you are not checking stops in the rain.

On a poor-weather day, a shorter outing is perfectly fine. One focused visit with a pleasant break often leaves a better memory than several hurried changes of location.
