Direkt zum Artikel ↓Humpback whales pass Byron Bay on their migration roughly from late May or June to October or November. In the first half of the season they travel north towards warmer breeding waters; from about September many come back south, often with calves and closer to shore. Cape Byron, the most easterly point of mainland Australia, is one of the best land-based places on the east coast to watch them, and boat tours run from the area during the season. Our Byron Bay Itineraries include the Cape Byron headland walk, which doubles as a whale-watching route in winter and spring.
Numbers and timing vary from year to year, and there are no guarantees on any single day. Mornings with light winds and a calm sea make spouts and breaches easier to see. Dolphins are often visible all year, and sometimes turtles.
Bring binoculars, a hat and water. Look for the spout first, then watch the same area for a tail or a breach. Patience works better than moving from spot to spot.
Tours leave from Byron Bay and nearby harbours such as Ballina and the Tweed during the season. Some launch from the beach in Byron itself, which means a wet launch through the surf; others use larger boats from a harbour.
If you are prone to seasickness, choose a larger boat, take precautions before you board and sit at the back on deck. Or skip the boat and watch from the cape, which in many years gives very good sightings.
The loop with stops takes 2.5–4 hours. Costs are close to zero if you walk; budget for breakfast and coffee in town, roughly AUD 20–40 per person.
Bottlenose dolphins are often seen around The Pass and off Main Beach throughout the year, sometimes surfing the same waves as the board riders. Sea turtles feed around Julian Rocks, a small rocky island offshore that is part of the Cape Byron Marine Park and a popular snorkelling and diving site. Snorkel and dive trips there run all year, weather permitting.
June to November is the season. Many people find September and October particularly good, because whales returning south with calves often come closer to shore. Sightings vary by year.
Yes, often. The height and the position of the cape give a wide view of the migration route. Bring binoculars and allow at least an hour.
If you want to see whales up close and are fine on the water, yes. If you get seasick or are on a budget, the cape often gives good sightings for free.
The Cape Byron headland walk and nine other day routes, each with a rain alternative, are in Byron Bay Itineraries – 10 Day Routes. To find a base close to the cape track, read Where to Stay in Byron Bay. All guides are in Byron Bay Travel Guides.
Times and prices are planning estimates, not timetables or guaranteed sightings. Check tour operators, weather and track conditions before you go.
